At this point I’m pretty convinced that Riot is not concerned with longevity of the game in mind, especially with the esports decisions over the past few years.
They want to sell a ton of skins NOW, and then the shareholders can jump out and put their money somewhere else when it all collapses.
I'm not a LOL fan + haven't finished Arcane, but yeah it's unfortunate that LOL can't find new players. After a decade of bad PR from the toxic, competitive nature of LOL, many think it's naturally unfun.
Sending love from the OW community, we're having the same issue 💕
I think that follows when you put all of the effort to anything else with the IP instead of the base game. Like lord, this game is too hard and immense in its learning curve to have such a shit new player experience.
It really doesn't help that the "main" League game is so hostile towards new and casual players. There are a million mechanics that don't get explained by the game at all and at the same time, messing up is extremely punishing...which leads to toxicity from your teammates.
From what I've seen, games like Fortnite are so popular partially because you can just pick them up and start playing without many complications. League requires you to watch hours of YouTube tutorials... at the very least 💀
See the problem with that is in order to become a League of Legends player, you have to play League of Legends, and rarely does anyone want to do that more than once.
I genuinely tried to get into it since it's one of my boyfriend's favorite games. But I couldn't, I hate that game so much, I get overwhelmed with everything on the screen so easily and the other players are always assholes. 😭😭
Where are you getting this data? From what I can tell from online counts, the peak active player count is consistently 10m higher than when season 1 released. Maybe the saturation for the turnover from entertainment to game is already being peaked, or continuing to grow.
I mean, as someone who works in social/community/marketing for games, the idea would be that these more mainstream things would bring more players into League.
The fact that they don’t is a problem for Riot and speaks negatively as a whole toward the IP itself.
People will talk shit about League anyways. Arcane was incredibly successful, K/DA too and it brings eyes to League even if people don't play it. They're still very popular in games and tournaments, even with their other game Valorant. If it wasn't, they wouldn't do it again... As a consumer.
Duh, nothing stays relevant forever. It was an event and a collab w popular singers that's why they did it twice. (True Damage and Heartsteel). To sell skins. How do you keep up relevancy? You keep making things like that for promos. Like why wouldn't Riot do these things for the sake of their game?
Lots of y’all saying “GOOD” don’t understand that without new blood or new users things die and that means no more things like Arcane or K/DA if it’s not doing what was intended by bringing in new users.
It’s worth noting there are a multitude of non-LoL games set in that world and intended for more single player/story based experiences that Riot has made.

but really a net negative in general
You like storytelling and making movies. Do. That.
No, it doesn't print money. But it maintains and grows the audience in a different way.
There's always time to adjust your course.

If the thing doesn’t do what it is intended to do, it will end even if people like it better than the thing it’s advertising.
I think that genre peaked awhile ago and has already reached all the players that are going to enjoy it
And they’re fun too.
I heard really good things back when I was playing League, but never picked them up.
