I assume a lot of you have done those ancestry tests where you send DNA to a firm and they send you back things like "ethnicity estimates". Curious about your thoughts on those.

Turns out that was a lie— and that the family line in question resulted from the 48 year old son of a confederate soldier impregnating a 13 year old from Virginia
And helped weave the historical connection of the deep past migrations.
Now I am waiting for the update with % of Sapiens, Neanderthal, or Denisovan DNA
Those last 3 I can trace to my paternal grandmother; but the Albanian/Balkan is outta nowhere
Mainly, I just don’t want to pay for it and it’s not a priority, but also, I don’t necessarily want to volunteer my DNA do some random database.

this guys post from linkedin gives a pretty good high level about how powerful this sort of data can be. i’m not certain how much more of a privacy risk having your data directly in the database could pose, but it’s not for me.
