I noticed that, used to be 5 columns, with 2/5 being somewhat new to me content. Now it's just 3 and you have to scroll forever for new creators. That's probably their intention, same as Facebook Marketplace not showing you relevant results so you spend more time on Marketplace, fuck 'em though....
Ive been using a firefox extension to revert the youtube layout back to what it looked likr around 2012 or so, so I havent even noticed this issue lol. Plus, I mostly use the subscriptions tab anyway (as should everyone)
So it wasn't just me? I dragged the corner a bit till the thumbnails went smaller again. But only some, not as small as they were just 1 day ago. What shitty tech company would elect to show its users less of their available content?
Eventually they will be so big it will just be one big thumbnail you see, and you won't get to change it, it will be "this is what you are watching now or GTFO"
Only thing worse is the app for various TV platforms now doesn’t let you change the order your subscriptions are displayed in. So now I can’t go through alphabetically to find a channel to check what they’ve done, I have to go through the random list until they appear.
It's a weird thing to be looking for third party applications to access YT, because of how inconvenient they're making it to use their actual site, but that's where I'm at now. It's ridiculous. Add some customization options, YT, for the love of all that is holy. I'm a paying customer.
Oh thank fuck I thought I was losing it. Still don't see why every company wants to make my giant ass monitor into a glorified smartphone. I browse on desktop specifically so more information can fit on my screen at a time, not so I can see thumbnails in higher res than their video.
It's weird, seems to come and go on my Apple TV. Suddenly it seems like all the thumbnails are huge. Then like a few days later, they're back to normal. Then a few weeks later they're huge again for a few days.
Samsung TV. Roku stream box with the official Youtube app. When the Youtube app changed like a year ago or so. I contacted Youtube and the basically told me they'll take it any suggestions under consideration.
I grabbed a Control Panel for Youtube addon for my browser and I now have three glorious rows of six thumbnails each, and no more shorts. So nostalgic. :)
I hadn't consciously considered it that way before, but I can totally visualize it now. (Although, perhaps not as well as someone who actually has such a house. Or any house.)
Most people vastly underestimate exactly how MUCH content is on YouTube. According to estimates, each day they add around 720k NEW HOURS of content, and stream out an estimated 1 BILLION HOURS of video. It's mind-boggling.
I don't begrudge them their ads. I just wish they did them in a better way.
I genuinely have no clue what it looks like.
I don't view anything at all except my subs page.
It's a opentab on my browser and has been for 15yrs.
Probably been 10-12yrs since I ever loaded the homepage.
the subscriptions page also looks like what he is describing (at least for me, maybe we're in a test group). The sub page and home page both are just 3 columns, with huge low-res jpeggy thumbnails.
It hasn't been quite as long for me, but same. I actually use plugins that automatically redirect the home page to subscriptions and that remove all other recommendations. I simply do not care what nonsense YT wants to recommend me after the amount of grifting and fascist propaganda it has been.
Showing you only what you're probably gonna look at anyway means they don't get the additional revenue they might be getting from OTHER, possibly more lucrative, videos.
That said, I changed my YT bookmark on my browser to my Subscription page ages ago, and haven't looked back since.
(On firefox) Go to your browser extensions
-> on the uBlock Origin row click the 3 dots
-> click options
->go to the "My filters" tab
->Paste the fuckery here and you can change the "per-row:" to fit your liking

My trouble is that YT keeps asking me to do surveys to which my answer is always 'none of the above'
I’m not that old, and they should have a slider for US to choose…
And the app doesn’t use any of your data, which is a bonus.

It let's you decide the number of thumbnails per row and you can switch off YT-shorts.
I thought I was the only one.
Weird indeed.
And something political keeps coming up
They wont fix it, because the executives are getting older, richer, and need to see the icons from their theater seating room in their house.
I hadn't consciously considered it that way before, but I can totally visualize it now. (Although, perhaps not as well as someone who actually has such a house. Or any house.)
They're a streaming platform that pays 0 dollars for their content?
Is it the storage and bandwidth? Is that crazy expensive?
Don't they realize the advertisers WANT their viewers? "Don't sell coke if he said shit!" uhhh go fuck yourself? RC will take that ad play?

No YouTube, my monitor is NOT a Tablet and I'm neither a kid or a grandma
