Device has a busted USB-C port. Manufacturer offered to sell me a replacement board, which would be an easy drop-in replacement well within my skillset, but it's oh so tempting to use this as an excuse to try once more to get into microsoldering since the port itself only costs a buck and change. - ThreadSky

Problem: different manufacturers arrange the pins slightly differently, and some of those are on the underside of the port, inaccessible to a standard soldering iron. I'd need to buy and learn new tools just to desolder the original port and find a matching one on DigiKey.

The hot air rework station itself would cost more than the replacement board - which would also have zero learning curve, so I could get my device back in action in no time.

But man, @ifixit.com and @shahrammokhtari.bsky.social in particular just make me want to learn and do more on my own. Bless.

Take the plunge! Start with one of the cheaper rework stations, that's what I did. It pays for itself after a while and it's really empowering to know you can fix these things. The basics of microsoldering are not that hard, they just need some practice to get repeatable results.
