Why was the policy popular? Because the media and government had convinced the public that Japanese Americans were 'the enemy within'. Nothing has changed, since then, except who is identified as 'the enemy'.

Worth pointing out that the Chinese Exclusion Act was still in force in 1942 and the Johnson-Reed Act from 1924. Executive Order 9066 was almost inevitable given the built-in prejudices that existed. :(

Someone recently told me that forcing Trans people to use unisex bathrooms or bathrooms that aligned with their birth gender is supported by 85% if the population. Which I didn't look into but I responded "it wasn't until the 90's that more Americans supported interracial marriage"...
