Yeah, I was reading at three and was one of maybe only two or three kids in my kindergarten class who could read on the first day of class. I'd tell my non-reading classmates what everything said on the boards (bulletin and chalk lol).

I think reading aptitude varies enough at that age that it wouldn’t be right to assume they’re not being challenged, though of course it’s possible. And I wouldn’t equate interest or even intelligence to aptitude, either.

It’s a delicate balance. You have to try and find ways to make them WANT to read. Which can be innate! But not always. But also push too hard and they’ll push back

It depends on the kid, but my eldest was well into Grade 1 before he started reading. And that was with a lot of help from me. My youngest at 5. Every kid is different.

Our pediatrician says it's normal for kids to pick up reading anywhere from age 3 to age 8.

I learned to read basic stuff around age 2-3 and could write cursive before I hit kindergarten. I have no kiddos of my own, but, as an adult, I've realized that I definitely was an outlier.

That might be the cause of my blinders here, since it was just something I did. When I asked my grandfather when I was five what happens when you die, he gave me reading material about the process of putrefaction. I never really gave much thought to the process until seeing my nephews grow up

My godmother was an English teacher, so when I saw her, usually at my grandparents many parties, she'd have me read and then discuss what I read with her and asking me conclusions I'd draw *from* what I read.

Sounds like my grandpa telling me about gravity wells and space-time curvature when I was seven. I just thought it was cool and interesting. Didn’t realize it was actually general relativity till I was in college.

I have a gravity well pet peeve -- when it's taught, the example diagram is often *using gravity* to show how the object distorts things. It's tautological! ;)

Or put balls of varying weights on a trampoline. Roll a marble across it fast enough and it’ll make to the other side, but its “straight” trajectory has been distorted/altered by the ball’s “gravity.” (See? Easy explanation for a 7yo!)

I have two kids. I was an early reader and wanted to read anything I could. My first kid was the same way and was writing (honestly not that fully-developed) books at 3. Second kid would shut down anything that smacked of teaching, and she learned to read later than 6, out of stubbornness.

Reading aptitude differs in the population and different ways of teaching it result in different acceleration points. They don't really get concerned until second grade.

Could be just reading out loud. My son is in second grade now and is reading ok out loud. At six, he was struggling. Both of my kids have been very interested in reading from an early age but that's also been reading to themselves or us reading to them.

I remember kids in class already being asked to read aloud from the textbook when I was in 2nd grade, so kids were more or less expected to be able to do that by then. As the parent of a 2nd grader and 3rd grader, it seems about right to me. (Caveats: "gifted" programs, engaged parents, etc.)
