This may be a one off, but it was a very sharp drop in spending on cars, recreational goods and other nondurables -- stuff that falls into the "nice to have, but not necessary" category. Consumers pulled back in January (before all of this * waves around * happened).

We put the kibosh on that. Was gonna go for a hybrid or PHEV, likely new (due to those being hard to find used) minivan that could handle hauling orchestral perc and sailing gear, would have been stretching budget a bit but not awfully. Indefinite hold now. No way am I getting that kind of loan now.

In my experience as an indie biz, January is a terrible time for sales even in normal years: it’s right after the holidays and Winter vacations, so everyone is feeling broke.

Add a heaping load of future uncertainty to that, and yeah, I can see where people would not be in a spending frame of mind.
