shutter speed is one thing but focus has to lock on the subject also, which can be challenging especially since you were pretty close to the action it seems!

Yes, and I still had my dslr back then so no assisted focus like with the mirrorless in have now. Horses are one the reasons why I changed btw.

my main reason was size and weight, would never go back. still shooting with traditional AF lacking subject recognition though but great to hear that works well...will be my next step. if only buying photo stuff wasn't that addictive 😅
