They know that Zelenskyy is far more popular here than Trump, and so now, if Starmer keeps to his invite to Trump, they can attack him for that, and if he cancels it, then they can pretend that the moral outrage of their readers has beaten him
Well, he shouldn't have offered the State visit in the first place. It looked like a mistake at the time. Suggesting it might be possible would perhaps have been justified. Offering it as a done deal? Poor strategy. He's got it right in the past 24 hours, but there is a price for that mistake.
Would love to see KS call their bluff on this, but we all know that whatever he does there will be a pile on. (“Hopeless Starmer Cancels Visit With Biggest Ally” etc.).
They could have reported it as a small paragraph on page 9. They could have chosen not to report it at all. They chose to make it a front page banner headline. That means something. It means a lot.
The Daily Fail can get in the bin. It’s opportunistic it does everything possible to undermine the government. There’s absolutely no doubt who the Daily Fail represents and in whose interests it operates. It should be ignored, I wouldn’t even line the cat’s litter tray with it !
Ukraine represents a cleavage that is exposed by Trump. Should the UK have its own positions or be happy to mimic the US? Quite a few Brexit sovereignty fan boys and fan girls seemed happy to play second fiddle in a US dominated world. Others believe in a strong UK in multipolar order
Morning Roland. I have a take on this, not sure how hot though 😂Here goes: The Mail are doing this as they know Starmer will certainly not cancel this visit given the diplomatic tightrope he’s trying to manage. So the mail will whip people up to oppose this already hard to stomach visit to damage KS
Totally agree - people need to realise they have to find another way to express their revulsion about Trump. In other words it’s not about us, it’s about Ukraine’s safety and future security.
You’re right - it’s the only explanation that makes sense. They’ve spotted an opportunity to harness populist emotions and weaponise it against Starmer. No consideration of the perilous situation the world faces and the need for cool heads and unity. Predictably despicable.
The Mail has also seen the opinion polls and understands Trump is deeply unpopular in the UK, even among their readership. It's an easy front page that requires even less effort than their usual bilge.
Starmer was acting like a vassal to Trump ! WTH .... It is the UK that has the most aircraft in Europe and its an attractive target for Putin's missiles. Hasnt he even thought about it ?! It was so degrading to have to act that way as head of state. 😕
Starmer was acting like the whole of the British intelligence service is completely intertwined with the US, and that damaging that relationship would be catastrophic for UK and ultimately European security. Cos it is. Shhh now, the grown ups are talking
Morning Nick 😃
Obviously I’m purely speculating here. The indefinite postponement theory you are suggesting is certainly more likely than an actual official cancellation of the offer imho. The entirety of our intelligence is completely intertwined with the US and there is no way KS will damage that
You’re right, and in doing so the Mail meet in horseshoe formation with the left-wing backlash against Trump’s state visit. They’re trying desperately to undermine this Government, and they are prepared to go against type to do it.
It’s all there. We need to keep our eyes open. I’m seeing far too much of the left and centrist overreacting to these twists in the right wing narrative - almost like glimmers of hope. It’s a trick. They do not share your views. See them for what they are, and what they’re trying to do.
On paper it is (terrible pun incidental) but it has its moments when it moves further right. The “Enemies of the People” headline about judges immediately springs to mind.
Wow the Daily Mail really has had a change of direction on the normal unpleasant bulshit it normally reports, do you think the normal staff are on a weekend retreat and left the office cleaner in charge? They are going to be really pissed off when they come back
Not at all. All they really want to do is embarrass Starmer after his much televised invitation to Trump. There's no morality involved in this. It's all about making life difficult for Starmer.
Given where public sympathies lie, it’s pretty easy and risk-free for the likes of the Mail to be pro-Ukraine and anti-Trump, and just “bend with the wind” to maintain sales/clicks.
The shift will only really be significant when they start running front pages criticising Farage…
Finally! Proof that we live in a multiverse and travel between different instances is possible 😳
I like the look of that one. A DM with a moral compass? Lucky buggers!
Would love to see him come down the steps off Air Force One to find Danny Dyer, Tyson Fury and Charles Bronson on day release as his welcoming committee!
Opening line from Dyer being, ‘Take that ridiculous hat off you twat’!!!
I expect that Trump will be kept well out of earshot from any protests about him. Current powers against protestors, introduced by the previous government, will be used to the full.
You want to bug Trump, make the visit the most perfunctory possible. Have an undersecretary of sort meet him at the airport with 4 policemen as guard, no fancy uniforms. Drive him in a three car convoy to a WWII airfield for a meeting with your King of twelve minutes duration in an empty hanger.
If their man was still in charge they’d run something like ‘Boris masterstroke - PM plays to Trump’s ego to bring peace in Ukraine and cement special relationship with the US’
Well that will be a nice cosy chat then
I'm sure they'll have a laugh about "poking the bear"
Both will decide that Z should have "played it differently" then move on to bashing Starmer
AS soon as Trump was leading in the campaign, European leaders already aired warnings. Now, this is is happening. Trump-Vance at a time when US inflation, unemployment, and gas prices are up, lost Europe as an export region. Even private citizens refuse to book tours nor buy from the US.
Keir Starmer withdraws the visit... the Daily Heil the next day: "Keir destroys the Atlantic bridge, what a lefteye luvvy. We love Trump because he's fash like us."
Yep. Tomorrow it’ll be back to PM bashing for no good reason.
Let’s also remember the King is the only one who can rescind the offer officially. It’s not going to happen, it’ll just be kicked down the road. That’s the best we’ll get.

KS won’t be allowed to win this.
But here we are.
Everything is upside down and back to front now
Different editorial team / policy
Anything could happen…
As long as a visit creates some leverage (and frankly I am sceptical about how much…) then it’s better to keep it dangling.
Biting our tongues to save Ukrainian lives is surely worth it (assuming it helps even a bit).
There may yet come a time, however, when Trump’s behaviour pushes formerly allies too far - then he comes an enemy we all need to rally against.
Awkward for their boy Farage though.

It changes with the wind.
Unless they went to bed a disgusting rag and woke up as a beacon of principled morality.
They're opposed to a bully visiting but were ok with it when he was just a plain old multiple felon and rapist? Nah.

You would reach more people, when you add a good description into the Alt-text field.
That is pretty easy, especially, when your image just contain text.
This way, you support visually impaired people and everyone else, who rely on a good filled Alt-text.

Reminds me of the Heseltine quote on Boris Johnson:
Running to the front of the crowd and shouting "Follow Me!"

Now all we need is a lot of the same for the Garbage and ReFuk'd over here in the UK.
Anti Fascism for the UKs Far Right gutter press.....hopefully a turn around.
Can't confirm if it has always been less nazi but that could be true
A lot of people don't appreciate the difference, which is surprising.
Don't want to risk that.
