Totally understand your point! I believe that empathy is possible with anyone. I think it's about understanding the human being, not about accepting or validating their behaviour. Or something... (Still in training!)

Yep, studied historic empathy, had to put ourselves in the shoes of someone in the KKK. Taught me a valuable lesson. It made me feel sick. Understanding why someone does something does not mean that you have to have positive emotions towards them. Even harder to do it if it's in the present.

Yeah - I understand. I work on a suicide helpline and am in training to be a counsellor, so empathy is a key part of the work... We humans are (amazingly) capable of holding more than one emotion about a person at one time. I'm trying to focus on the compassion bit, without denying the disgust bit.

I also think that empathy is really hard when someone has done something heinous – it’s harder to have empathy for Elon Musk's dad, for example, than for Elon himself. I think empathy is much easier when you see or hear someone being vulnerable.
