Thanks Doc
That was an interesting article in that it increases the probability there was life on a very young Mars.
It is a break from the doom and gloom that I have to read to make sense of it all here on the only planet we have as there is no Planet "B" .
We need to get the hell off Mars before we corrupt that planet too. I don't want the planet police [Vogons] coming to earth like, "We're here to extinct humanity for the good of the Universe."
This has nothing to do with Musk - in fact evidence for life on Mars would be a strong argument to keep Musk's hands off the planet as he'd contaminate it and might exterminate it. Mars investigation predates Musk/Trump by decades and will last long after they're gone.
All of NASA costs only ~$64/yr to each US taxpayer. Cancelling it all would do nothing for the things you list. Taxing billionaires & businesses at pre-Reagan levels would do way more. US top tax rate was 70% until 1980. Think what could be done with that. https://taxpolicycenter.org/sites/default/files/publication/137756/04_6.png
Honestly, most average people on this planet are more curious about these and anything, and yet the place is being avoided like a quarantined or restricted air space area.
Hydrocarbons on #Mars: "Among the molecules were decane, which has 10 carbon atoms and 22 hydrogen atoms, and dodecane, with 12 carbons and 26 hydrogen atoms. These are known as alkanes, which fall under the umbrella of the chemical compounds known as #hydrocarbons."
(a) see earlier comment about how little NASA costs and (b) why not tax your wealthy a bit more? That way you could have a free health service & homes for the homeless.
I think it's such a horrible shame how much of my Mars excitement, curiosity, & joy has been destroyed by Elon Musk, anti-science movement of Trump Administration, & the corruption of the current political climate.
When are we all going to agree that although scientific research into Mars to understands planet and life and all that is great, it's patently RIDICULOUS for a grown man to speak about a MILLION people living on it.

Also, am I the only one who feels these probes are a little bit Wall-E-esque?
You'd better warn the microbes who is the President of the Unites States down on Earth to give them a heads up. Don't want us infecting the resident Martians
Currently, only a photon can go fast as speed of light and our fastest probe- Solar Parker- can travel at 0.063% the speed of light.
I wonder if in the future we can create a photon with A.I. nanotech built in that could steer it to places like super-earth k2-18b and be able to collect data?
Actually gold isn't made in the Sun, it's made in supernova explosions or merging neutron stars - both events that occur with stars with much higher mass than the Sun.
So that could be in pools of it ,big enough to be detected. Solar wind blows water from the earth and the moon gets that,it travels out with solar wind tons of it daily.. seen the thunderbolts project plasma reactor , transmutation of gas to rare metals. Damn interesting science, zpinch ect...
Your opinion is made on Faith, faith that what was said in science past as a guess is in belief a truth. You have belief it's a truth. Mark my words 6 months from now, they will disclose what I say... Also the sun has one day, it's mid afternoon..They've detected gold and carbon on the sun's surface
They guess that because they had to say something to justify their jobs, remember all science guesses ever have changed.!!Transmutation of elements happens continuously in stars. Remember science always assumes/guesses then designs experiments to justify their claims, often tangenting off. 6 monthsΒΏ?!
I actually know people who work on Z-pinches. The origin of elements is based on well understood nuclear physics with decades of research behind it. Go and read some books on stellar nucleosynthesis before spouting rubbish like this. Gold is not made in the Sun. Bye!
Is it just me....or does anyone else "not" give a crap about Mars!? I mean seriously, I'm all for space exploration re: satellite technologies, etc., but I'm fuc#"->ing TIRED of spending tax dollars on this type of science, especially regarding Muskrat's SpaceX grift. Let's solve earth's issues 1st!
Sorry. I donβt care about mars just now. When our own planet will soon be uninhabitable, people starving on earth what good will mars do us. The funds need to be used to shore up our current planet. Itβs not like we can simply pick up and move there.
While I understand your frustration-the amount of government budget spent on NASA isn't much - approx $64 annually per taxpayer from 2022 budget. Scientific research is vital.
Unfortunately, misinformation, political nonsense, greed & corruption are the soupe du jour.
Studying other planets helps us understand our own. We wouldn't know about greenhouse effects and the way they work without observations of Mars and Venus for example.
Yes, well, I suppose if you keep telling yourself that it works. Let's continue to destroy Turtle Island then we can move on to decimate another planet.
That what works? Learning how other planets work gives us a better idea how ours does. Doesn't mean we do the right things - that's on the people on Turtle Island that Musk/Trump foooled into voting for them.
What they don't realize is that by the time we colonize other planets, Earth's climate and pollution issues would have already been solved, likely thousands of years earlier!
Thank you for the post. Donβt know why youβre getting so many negative comments. Science is too extensive and complex to keep up with everything. I read the journals for my field but appreciate getting bits of interesting/good news from others. Keep posting!
If tantalizing discoveries of the precursors of life keep happening, at what point do we put the whole planet off-limits to humans and their contamination? The sun will continue to brighten over the next 500 million years and could improve the chances of life evolving if we don't interfere.
There are already areas of Mars that are off limits to landers, crewed or otherwise, because planetary protection is a recognised problem without, at this stage, a solution. So yeah - we get what you're saying.
Carbon based life that uses different chemistry - eg. no DNA, no RNA, different amino acids - would be very alien. Even alien life using DNA but a radically different genetic code would still be alien life. There's a lot more complexity here than just carbon = same as us.
I think that Perseverance should just write back to us: either recommending that Musk come immediately to Mars. It is ready to receive him.
Or, that it's a really stupid idea to attempt to achieve 'survivable life on Mars' in one's own lifetime, which is a 12 year old's fantasy. Not real Science.

How long before the current Administration forbids non-Earthly life?

We already knew there are aliens bc they inhabit the regime. Is there a deportation policy for Mars?

only be a candy bar!
