The 18% exemption is count wide, but the cases have reportedly all been traced to private schools that don't even report vaccination rates, but are likely lower than the nearby public independent schools - where vaccination rates are only 46%!!!! 😬

I’m sorry that happened but thank you for telling her story. The thing is blindness isn’t a super rare complication of measles. It’s the single leading cause of blindness among children in low income countries.

High end estimates have the measles blinding 2 out of every 1000 children in low income countries. Then there’s the 1 in 1000 chance that the kid develops encephalitis w/ complications of deafness or intellectual disability. Even in high income countries 1 to 2 in 1000 kids die from this disease.

I caught measles just before the vaccine became available. I was really sick and ended up with pneumonia. I’ve only been that sick one more time in my 66 years when I had sepsis and pneumonia in 2022. My kids and grandkids are vaccinated.
