But really, clothing expectations have changed so much. Everything has gotten so much more casual, and gender distinctions in clothing are much less rigid. Idk if there really is anything we can compare to corsets.

It certainly was because it wasn't that long ago where you couldn't go to school or work without being punished for not wearing one. You can still be punished for not wearing one to work. And they have always hurt. They've hurt since I was an A cup.

I think there were probably women who didn't wear corsets, either because they were pregnant or because they were poor. But they aren't the characters in most period movies

Mostly poor women .... even if they were pregnant, middle class and up still wore a corset. There was a whole study done in the late 1800's that found that wearing a corset during pregnancy actually harmed the fetus. Lots of still births, deformities and abnormally small babies occurred

For example during the regency era the stays/undergarments needed for the empire waist gowns were totally compatible with pregnancy use. The boned, tight-laced corsets of the later industrial revolution did cause various problems, and they also sold special ones for pregnancy

I have EEE/F cups right now (not bragging, it’s not comfortable at all). I absolutely NEED my bra and it has to have underwire or my tits will not stay up. And it needs four or five hooks.

Yep, G sized tits here, and I am FAR more comfortable with a bra on. When it’s properly fitted (as in, not fitted to US sizing and the BS “just add 4 inches that don’t actually belong here”) it’s actually MORE comfortable. I went UK sizing 12 years ago and never looked back.
