OK, I may have to eat my words. I started using Duolingo again and it has actually been very helpful, and it is letting me skip the beginner lessons that I don’t need.
I think the last time I used it was maybe 2016, and it seems like a lot has changed since then!

ME: I took three years of Spanish. I grew up in Los Angeles. Could you please just teach me some more nouns and help me with the subjunctivo?
DUOLINGO: You didn’t know this one phrase that was used exclusively in one part of Caracas 40 years ago, so no. Back to “donde está la biblioteca” for you!

ChatGPT can answer questions like that pretty accurately. It sucks at many things, but grammar in other languages is not one of those things.
I should give it another try. I became pretty fluent fairly quickly.
Because my country is bilingual 🇨🇦 all our labels are also in both languages so I regularly read the French. Watching French movies with English subtitles is also helpful.
Exposure learning, a language cafe, etc. Any excuse to actually use the language.
A language is like a marathon, and you can't just train for one using a treadmill.
I learned massively more in 2 years of High School language class than I’ve learned in 2 years of using Duolingo
I'd rather support starving families
The platform itself is good, just, they will not stop enshittifying as hard as they possibly can.
I get my Spanish lessons from Troy and Abed.
Needless to say it ended badly. That Duolingo bird is a p’taq.
...you can learn Klingon on Duolingo...?
I just recently moved on from it because I found that Drops was a little more robust in the areas that I am wanting to learn. But, also, it has icelandic, which Duo still hasn't picked up.
Namely speaking of exceptions to grammar rules or verbal conjugations.
"The men write in the sugar."
And "nello" isn't even the correct "in the" word for writing in, say, a notebook (that's "--sul quaderno") 😂
Every little bit helps.
Also, pick a song, translated it, learn it and try to understand the meaning of what you're singing, but one song at a time.
I was overly excited to see the bank: El banco esta cerrado!
Turns out that owl was just a manipulative asshole!

I am bordering on saying it’s probably the best tool ever invented for language learning.
Trust it and watch where you are in 2 months.
