Seriously, ya'll VASTLY overestimate Junji Ito's influence in manga. You think since he is the only horror artist you know, he must be the only horror artist everyone knows.
Ito is a piddly drop of water in the Kazuo Umezu bucket.
And Umezu is a tiny splash in the Shigeru Mizuki ocean.

There's a reason Shueisha advertised Ring ni Kakero as the "Hot-Blooded Fighting Manga Bible", not Dragon Ball.
It's why horror manga is so difficult to sell in the West. If it's not Junji Ito, people aren't interested.
Yes, it's really difficult to find horror manga in the west and i really hope that's changing.
Here in Brazil there's a horror book publisher. They brought Junji Ito, but they brought too Atsushi Kaneko, Nagabe and Shintaro Kago.
I wonder how much of it goes back to anime/manga fans usually not knowing their creators, which in turns makes broader comic book fans not look harder... Not enough people are championing these guys
Was McFarlane great? Sure? Influential? Of course! The foundation for all modern comics? Maaaaybe not...
Because it is impossible for two different cultures to have different tastes.
McFarlane was just a random name I grabbed out of my head. This post is not about McFarlane.
If that is difficult for you, substitute his name for Mike Grell.
Influential at the times? Absolutely. Now? That influence has waned.
