"Thompson’s death was not considered sufficiently important by his colleagues to merit the cancellation of the meeting he had been due to attend in the Manhattan Hilton. Just 48 hours later, his job was relisted."

“Sorry your family was killed in a plane crash. However, we are very busy and do you really need to take a week off?
Oh by the way can you put off the funeral till after the national sales conference.”….
The shooting has revealed the complete moral disintegration of the USA. A country whose democracy and rule of law is so broken that half the country thinks it's OK to murder the rich and the other half want to have the assassin killed.
You prove my point. There is widespread justification of extra judicial killing. This can never be acceptable. Whatever kind of despicable arsehole the CEO was, in a civilised society no one deserves to be murdered. Even murderers.
I wasn't claiming it was new particularly, it's clearly been a gradual change. I don't believe though that 20 years ago that half the population would have openly supported the gunning down of a public figure.
Nice international article. The reaction of the public and employer resonate, with me at least. I saw the shooter as a bit of a “Robin Hood” without really understanding the motivation, I instinctively erred to the “justifiable homicide” angle. I wasn’t alone, reaction to the McD staff aiding his..
..capture, and the general lack of outcry and ridiculing “he was a good man, family man” description. In truth that is underlined by the corporate reaction described. He was just an instrument of action in a corporate machine, whose leadership dehumanises its customers [and its staff, apparently]…
…to the point of irrelevance in its pursuit of wealth. I do feel for the children, no one should lose a parent, but I think the general malaise in the US wealth economy where there are rules for us and them; would suggest this may happen more often. I await with interest the juries view on guilt….
This is why you always take your PTO, sick days and time when you need to. These jobs don’t give 2 shits about you. You will be dead and gone and your job will be ré-listed before your family can make the funeral arrangements !
When the rich and corrupt, corporations and media barons, can subvert the rule of law whenever it suits them, then the law ceases to have any meaning. It will be overtaken by retribution.
Expect to see more direct vengeance in the years ahead - unless governments get a grip of the root causes.
Indeed. And when perpetrators of wrongdoing w/obscene liquidity just need to pay a fine (sometimes funded in whole or in part by tax payers to boot!) to get off the hook, it’s glaringly obvious the system is unbalanced and they’re taking the piss.
An entirely predictable & satisfyingly fitting tribute from an organisation motivated only by profit following the death of their motivated only by profit chief exec.
Mike, I’m a supporter of Bylines, but this appears to be factually inaccurate. The job listing was deemed fake several weeks ago according to multiple fact-checkers.

But the founding fathers have been venerated for centuries in the US. It's basically a state religion.

Likely heard on a conference call.
I guess what else would you expect, but I actually (stupidly) did expect better of them. Expecting some humanity, imagine.
