If you look back at history, there were many international commentators who said that Hitler wasn’t serious about the things he was saying. It was all for show.

I see many parallels between the two of them, not least the drug use in order to get them through life and play the parts that they so want to be able to do naturally.
Drugged up leaders aren't leaders - they're just junkies with a chip on their shoulder.
I wouldn't consider any of them 'leaders' whether they are addicted to substance abuse or not. Most of them quickly become mass murderers, of families, including all the young children and babies. As Trump has already been president once, it's more than likely he is an active member of that club.
The bit that shocks me isn't what I'm seeing in the US (it should be that, but it isn't). It's the lethargy and in some cases compliance of the media/journalism in other countries. It's almost as if this is just a blip, a passing note. This is the start of something terrible and VERY big!
I don't think European politics will respond lethargically.
Far more shocking is the absolute helplessness of the US opposition and the failure of the political system, combined with the collapse of morality and ethics.
Look at some of the headlines not just around Europe, but here in the UK regarding the fascist salute by that man child. They're petrified and some are actively supporting all of this. The same around Europe. It's about waiting to see how this all develops now, but I'm shocked to say the least.
True, UK media leans heavily to the hard right, except for The Guardian, the BBC, and a few smaller outlets.
That said, I’m fairly sure the vast majority of Brits are appalled by Musk's Nazi gestures and Trump’s policies. As you say, let’s see how it all plays out.
Well the Daily Mail only a few days ago headlined their front page with Hitler's "nicer part to his personality" hiding behind an English ex-girlfriend's account in her war-time diary. This morning THE TELEGRAPH called the fascist salute a "Roman Salute". History is repeating itself mate.
Yes, it seems they don’t even have a concept of ‘opposition.’ Their blind faith in and almost sacred veneration of an antiquated constitution, combined with the commercialisation of politics, has paralysed the system.
Both foreign governments and many media underestimated the risk about Adolf Hitler and the rise of Nazism in Germany in the years leading up to World War II.
When it comes to politics and society, Hitler's intellect was way greater than Musk's in much the same way Musk's intellect is far greater than Hitler's when it comes to investments. The gesture is a dead cat. I don't think Musk even knows what it is to be a Nazi. But what he does with the power...
... he has coupled with his minimal understanding of people, society and the world is frightening. The message shouldn't be 'Fear the Nazi!' It should be 'Fear the fool!' This is a child who has been given not only a box of matches, but also a gunpowder factory to go with it.
Plus the conservatives - Von Papen and his mates - who were confident they could make him Chancellor and still be able to control him. Making deals with the devil - tends to not work out well. Ask Faust.
They know what they are doing. They’re very meticulous. “We reckon you can get away with a Hitler salute Elon.” Truth is, he gets away with it, because too many people don’t care. Once they start getting away with the really nasty shit, there’ll be no way back. Very very dark days ahead.
Rather tangential comparison but I am reminded at times like this, particularly with some statements by some in the Israeli government with regards to Gaza, that we bombed and helped bring about regime change in Libya on the pretext of what Gadaffi *said* he would do to Benghazi.
If someone had asked me in 2012 what I thought the world would look like in 2025, I would never have said it would look like this.
Brexit and it's cursed aftermath.
War in Europe.
Overt fascists being elected in the USA.
Lies being the new normal.
Truth being so hard to find.
And it's terrifying. But we're here because the liars are aided and abetted by MSM 85% owned by right wing billionaires who now also own the increasingly anti social media and Internet.
Quite right Victoria 🍷
Though my biggest sympathy is for those in the USA who have to endure Trump, they're also our biggest hope, because you only have to use Bluesky to see the huge amount of good that's in America. I believe they'll fight and win yet.
Trump won a battle, not the war.
🕊🍷🇬🇧🇺🇲🇪🇺🇱🇷🇬🇧🍷🕊
They're not our biggest hope. America may well be lost. Trump did win the battle; it may have been the decisive battle. The rest of the world should plan on a worst-case scenario that it is.
So the UK needs to plan for a world where the US is no longer a friendly state; maybe even a hostile one.
Fair points, but I'm hopeful that what we've seen is America's version of our Brexit referendum; an idiotic venture sold by liars that only benefitted a few at the expense of the many.
There's already cracks opening up in the MAGA support and I'm optimistic that this will get worse.
This is the second time they've elected him though. They've experienced it before and consciously said "yep, I'm up for that again".
There will be many fallouts within his regime. That's its nature and a weakness. But it won't bring it down because ultimately, only one man matters in it.
Which means not allowing the likes of Farage and co to forge closer ties.
He’s a mediocre half politician who’s been allowed to court trump.
He’s a modern day Mosley.
It has to stop.
What Farage does is his business. Others, however, should call him out for it, including questioning where his loyalty lies. And, obviously, he should have no role whatsoever representing the UK.
Exactly this - and it was important to appease him until it got (almost) too late. Also it was the rich & powerful in the main who supported Hitler before the war started.
And, of course, even a lot of contemporary German politicians didn't take Hitler seriously enough – there was a view amongst the conservative establishment that Hitler could be manipulated to just get their policies through. Franz von Papen in particular laboured under the delusion he could tame him
Look on the bright side.
Trump has exploded the delusion that the USA occupies the moral high ground and is the exemplar of democracy.
Also the Myth that there is or ever has been a Special Relationship between the USA and the UK. We must now get on with the reality and recover our place in the EU
Having seen this all over bsky last night I had to endure the OH this morning saying she’d never heard of it taking place and she was ‘worried’ about some of the stuff I read on line. Anyone else seen this anywhere else in UK? Grrrr.
It was on the news Gareth, that's were me and Ian first saw it, my jaw dropped, don't know if they stopped showing it later as I turned the news off, I'd had enough
I think you've hit the nail on the head here, a lot of people just go "Nazi" but a hell of a lot of trumps policies and the way he used the word "alien" to describe migrants is so akin to that of 1930s Germany. Not to mention him wanting to "take" Panama and Greenland to.
It's so reminiscent of 1930's Germany, the propaganda, the gaslighting, now the actions, we have every reason to be afraid, people are sleepwalking when the evidence is infront of them
"Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it". I would add, those that are arrogantly complacent about history are doomed to watch it be repeated. We either call this shit what it is, or we are enabling it. Musk is a nazti piece of work.
I'm FEARFUL of the complacency I am seeing from my fellow Americans, media and so many legislators who appear to be stunned into silence & inaction - living in some fake rose coloured 'hopeful' place. This situation is BAD -very very BAD. There is no sugar coating it & we better WAKE UP.
Wow, look what is expressing through him. It's much better this is seen and out in the public domain, rather than hidden and kept behind closed doors. I want to see all of what's present, let's see what we're dealing with...
Apparently, what keeps social media thriving—what we all love to engage with the most—is OUTRAGE. He’s banking on it with this silly stunt. It’s a shame we cannot concentrate on ‘boring’, long-form info. any more. Just flooding the zone and all that, keeps us hooked.
I expect, in Germany in the 30's, sensible Germans thought he wouldn't *really* do the things he promised to do - which is the only excuse I can imagine as to why so many, apparently sensible, Americans, have supported Trump.
What will they do when they realise their error?
What did Germans do then? What are Russians doing now?
For the moment, Americans do still have a semi-functioning democracy. Whether they still will in four years is another matter. But if people wait until rights have truly gone before protesting, that's inevitably too late.
Most people in any authoritarian state will comply. They may grumble, they may even bend or ignore the rules where they think it safe. But to directly oppose is to court arrest or worse - and for most people, those are prices too high to risk, particularly if they doubt their opposition will work.
"Decent" Germans then, and "decent" Russians now, have been intimidated by ruthless Gov use of the military - and I reckon it is only time until Trump does the same. Can't imagine that actually happening - but maybe decent Germans didn't either, before it happened?
Rebels will need to be v brave.
Or almost. It's internal state security people should fear: the gradual erosion of rights combined with the need for permission to do whatever, or to have to prove a right. Fear of losing those privileges is a much more meaningful threat for low-level noncompliance. To begin with.
USA has begun to isolate itself from the rest of the world. Unfortunately, the power of Social Media and our MSM fascination with America means many in the UK will be influenced. We must do all we can to #StopFascism
Like this dickhead who stands waving his fucking ridiculous flag (now upgraded with the US flag attached and dons a maga hat) in my town every day…I do wind down my window and call him a facist c**t and nazi scum whenever I see him…don’t achieve much and he just angers me but I feel better for it.
Use media & thugs against minorities & opponents; attack the seat of government; ‘win’ an election with lies and deception of a poor electorate; attract big money and have opponents (and some supporters) who think you won’t carry out your policies - then have a big rally and make nazi salutes. 1933.
Appeasement never works, with a bully, but I think Chamberlin is misunderstood. Yes, having experienced the horrors of WW1, he wanted peace almost at any price. However, the realist in him knew that we needed more time to rearm. He bought us a year. I'd like to think war with the US unlikely, but??
It’s not the US Starmer needs to be worried about. It is, by refusing to call out things like last night’s Nazi salute, he empowers the Richard Littlejohn’s and all the other slime to become more overt in their bigotry and verbal violence.
I'd have thought doing a nazi salute in public was antisemitic therefore prosecutable.
He can call it what he wants, Huns in my country call it the Red Hand Salute but we all know what it is,a Nazi salute

And as for the Nazi salute, it's technically a ‘Roman salute,’ but I highly doubt Musk is a fan of Roman history. It was a SIEG HEIL, full stop.

Case in point when Elon renamed twitter you only say 'x'...
The 'American History' part is completely silent...
Nazi through and through
Funny how the US Jewish community is happy to go along with this
Strange how anyone says anything remotely anti-Israel and they're labelled 'antisemitic'
Meanwhile, moron shits on their heads and they say 'Thank you. More please'

Yes it's amazing how much of what Hitler was saying pre war at the time, chimed with what the right wing in the UK wanted to hear & supported
Vile, incredibly offensive gesture, twice, a deliberately provocative act on live TV to the world.
That he will build a base on Mars in his lifetime for one million chosen elite to survive climate breakdown.
He may be deranged, but take this seriously.
Former Tesla VP George Blankenship already told us Musk’s Mars plan explains all his actions.

Watch the attacks on LGBTQ folk ramp up now.
The liberals and conservatives thought they could manage Hitler. The failed. Same in Spain. It failed. Same in Italy. It failed
