Hi: for those of us looking in from outside who may not be familiar with the rules, if for any reason Trump suddenly ceases to be the GOP’s presidential candidate does the VP candidate automatically fill his place? As if they were already in office? Or do they urgently select a new candidate?

I don't think there is a rule on it. I think it would be up to the Republican Party. This close to the election it would cause an utter meltdown. As a Democrat I want the current Republican ticket to stay as it is. I pray for Trump to live until January 7, 2025.
