I feel like it’s easier to harp on struggling individuals’ small choices than to hold accountable the rich/powerful for their massively impactful choices. Highlighting their “failures” rather than systemic issues the powerful created protects power structures & the status quo. It’s awful.

I first heard it after the 2008 GFC when austerity was introduced to pay for bailing out the banks. At the time, social media was just getting started, there was no level playing field yet, power at the top were not used to being challenged. So they patronised us expecting to get away with it.
