Also a harbinger of higher cost of medical care for everyone else. An insurance based health care system like ours only works if preventable diseases like this prevented so that overall costs are down, and insurance can pay out when needed. More pay out means higher premiums for us all.

I’m an optimist. I see a measles outbreak as a result of a limited-scope bit of stupid. It’s not a total rejection of medical science, it’s one of a handful of things where the conspiracy theory was more “fun” than facts.

Thing is as far as my overall point it doesn't matter what the motivation is. Preventing things like measles from spreading is about far more than vaccine rates.Our once gold standard monitoring and prevention systems are not working if measles spread.Time sensitive interventions aren't occurring.

To use a real example, a government that drops the ball on HIV prevention can change course. A government with an official public policy that HIV doesn’t cause AIDS and the public buys into that belief has a much larger problem.

Measles has not been a significant problem because of the vaccine. But the CDC tell us that its efficiency assumes at least 95% coverage of the population. If coverage falls significantly below, people will find out fast what the world was like before 1963.

That's not really how it works, we need as much of the population as possible to have immunity to keep vaccines and treatments effective. Also, some people (young babies, people with certain disabilities, etc) legitimately can't be vaccinated or have poor immunity even after being vaccinated.
