Perhaps it's just my fervid imagination, but the result of using a laser big enough to make space non-transparent sounds an awful lot like the Big Bang to me: rapid cascade of energy creating matter in a very brief period of time.

I loved that book. Got it as a gift. Curious though if the error in the speed of light baseball chapter is fixed in the 10th anniversary edition. Although think it's better/funnier if it's not.
