OH, GOOD.
More people calling out the recycled Suppressed Memory/Satanic Panic bullshit known as The Body Keeps the Score.
Let’s do this more. A lot. It’s a trash book that retraumatizes victims, victim blames, and valorizes violence against women and children.
And he’s a sexual harasser.

But there is so much worse.
Don’t feel bad about not bothering.
I think it’s wild how he set out to write the trauma bible and then managed to do it in the least trauma-informed way possible.
I know my copy has a few places where my margin notes are something like “you gettin’ off on this, dude?” Because it really does have some enjoyment of pain aspects.
His current grift is low-quality, pre-recorded continuing education courses, which is ridiculous, but at least he’s not practicing.
To be brutally fair to the continuing education providers, he’s not doing anything anyone else isn’t doing. CE is a scam and a half.
If they want books with body counts, start with Christian “parenting” books. They’re doing FAR more damage.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure my smother heard something similar, and in that moment it was easier to just say, “You could have been worse” which is true, she could have been. But there was no way she was getting praise for the less than 8 years she put into parenting. (3 kids, 3 years apart)
I have read it because it’s so common for previous therapists of my clients to have made use/abuse of it, but my copy hit the wall several times in that one reading, and it’s a scribble of annotations, post-its, and written screaming. I think I may have stabbed it with my pen a few times.
It’s probably a good idea to remove it from your shelves and toss it in the trash/book recycling. Please don’t donate it.
There is so much woo and wankery that gets into even serious work.
You are nothing but trash.
Getting punched in the face or head? That causes a whiplash-like injury. We know this from boxing and boxing injuries.
We also know from studies that about 1 in 4 people who have been in a car accident (so a random sample) have a level of chiari malformation.
Try MaryCatherine MacDonald’s Unbroken: The Trauma Response is Never Wrong
Fire (SAFELY) probably also works.
And I've just.. not picked it back up.
but also that book seems vile
There are some worse books that could be sourced, and depending on context, arguing with a source can be useful.
But yeah, it needs to go away as a reliable source.
Thanks for sharing!
And it gives the medical side of the house a LOT of latitude to punt anyone who is difficult to diagnose over to psychology because a difficult patient is too much work and won’t accept “I don’t know” with grace, and a difficult patient might want treatment.
Do you have any recommendations?
(It’s another reason I hate him. That “Damaged Goods” mentality is so bad.)
What a creep.
One of these days, I really do need to finish the social history of what happened after the panic ended, and how some therapists pivoted and edited their language to obscure their involvement, while others just kept at it and shifted focus, because it didn’t really end, it just evolved.
What a horrible piece of work, book and author.
Reading the thread and the above, I think it might be time to stop trying.
(Which would be a relief.)
But if they really want one that will 🤯? Michael and Debi Pearl: To Train Up a Child, which has a body count. And I want that one on video, so we can watch them burn a copy.
Woo in psych is way too common, alas.
