Water is a sufficient and practical means of blocking radiation. You'd want about 12 feet of water between you and the vacuum of cosmic irradiated space.
The challenge, water is heavy. A gallon of fresh water weighs 8.34lbs. Fill a 12'x12'x12' cube with H20 and you have 107,686 lbs of water.
We can send all the Magats to Mars and the rest of us can stay here. If they want a selfish world, then they can create it on Mars. The rest of us care about our fellow Earthlings. We aren't perfect for sure, but we always strive to be better. Everyone deserves their version of a good life.
Musk has no comprehension of the impact of long-term deep space travel on the human body. Plus, he probably views crews on his missions to Mars as expendable.
Musk's proposed Mars colony won't sustain colonists; it doesn't take prolonged radiation exposure into account, not to mention adverse effects of lower gravity on a human body for a lifetime. They'll most likely be dead within a few years, at best.
Let me start by disagreeing; it’s insane lat/shoulder stability tied into an amazing core 🥻.
I think the apparent ongoing lack of shelter ideas for above LEO is perplexing.
High energy cosmic rays can produce damaging neutron flux from whatever we wrap around us.
Is 3m of H2O a low neutron source?
Um... sorry but this is already known. Mars is a dead planet for a reason. It has a very weak EM field, so space radiation hits Mars constantly. Terraforming is more than just making it breathable, they have to figure out how to make the EM field strong enough to block the harmful radiation.
That and bring their own soil and prevent contamination with whatever is in Martian soil. It’s nothing but a hypothetical fun sci fi rabbit hole. Not happening in Musk’s or any of our lifetime.
Not just that, but that we can create "magnetic force" just for Mars to have an atmosphere at all, otherwise the Sun's radiation will just wipe it away.
Their level of mental gymnastics superceded the level of thinking needed to understand this. 😭
Right!? I remember being obsessed with this about a decade ago, even looked into the “viability” of Venus, which is differently insane. Space is for things that don’t have feelings, like robots (and billionaires).
There's a short fiction writing that's quite what you're thinking. Sadly, it's under Amazon Orginals (I read it via free trial years ago), BUT... it's by a black author, so it's diverse. Title is EMERGENCY SKIN by N. K. Jemisin.
Definitely. There needs to be a high narcissistic component in their brain to be able to think about changing other planets while letting Earth, our own home, to die.
Funny enough, based on studies, we will go out first and this planet will still be here millions of years after.
I still hold out quite a bit of hope for humanity surviving long-term, and since I won’t be around to see it, my job is pretty simple— contribute to others’ success.
I agree. Though, I separate humans from humanity. Humanity is rooted in Empathy, and Empathy is the root of Love.
Oh, and what I'm saying above has no timelines. Who knows how long, or what will caused it. Just saying that this planet and life in it, can survive without us.
The Mars article is a great read. Humor with terrifying info on the possible radiation effects on humans. So if Elon wishes to go by all means, godspeed, dude. Just like university, you can just "read" about it, break things and get it done. Have fun, storming the castle, kids!
The ruling class will never go to Mars but they do think their luxury bunkers full of servants & security will save them from nuclear war. Maybe so, but will luxury bunkers save them from servants & security?
They're honestly afraid of that. I read somewhere the rich want to put electric dog collars on employees. The idea of just paying a living wage & treating them with respect is a nonstarter, apparently.
The last time I spent any time on this subject was in 2013, when I wrote about the extremely dubious Mars One “mission” that tricked some 200,000 people into paying $40 to fill out an application for a chance to be one of its lucky workaday astronauts. went bag money based on these incredibly s
The Biosphere experiment didn’t work, and that was under conditions where failure didn’t equal death. If we can’t pull that off on Earth, we’re not ready for Mars.
I’ve seen tons of documentaries about Mars and shows on the Science Channel and Mars looks terrible. Literally zero places to get coffee and probably still on dial up Internet access. Sucks.
Check out Kellie and @zachweinersmith.bsky.social book A City on Mars for an extremely detailed look at all the problems of going to and inhabiting Mars.
All of our services were being systematically destroyed slowly over the past 40 years. So, instead of "Save our services" I think we need to "Rebuild our services!" The whole purpose of government is to make life better for ALL of us. If it's not going to do that, it needs to be re-built to do it!
We literally do not have the technology to survive on mars.
The ship for a small crew to survive on mars for a time long enough to set anything up would likely have to be around the size of a football field and have immensely thick armor to clock out the radiation space and planet side and storms.
Artificial gravity generators fpr both soace and planet side so that the human bidy doesn't degrade.
Then we need teraforming equipment to create the ozone layer and whatnot around the planet. Thus would litteraly have to he send before hand and likely be dotted all over the planet to work
They would have to be ran remotely and any maintenance would gave to be done by robots. Also since we do not have this technology we gave no clue how long it would take to finish, 1 year? 10? 50? 100? 10,000?
And agter all of this, we still don't know if there is water on mars. We always here that
There is suspected frozen water under the dust, or underground rivers, but i haven't heard any solid proof that water has been found.
Next what resources are there? What stone? What metals? Anything else on our periodic table? What about stuff we have never encountered that could be extremely toxic
Generating power? Wind turbines would be toast in those storms, and solar panels would be extremely high maintenance. You would need nuclear unless we can invent something better.
Can earth plants grown in the soil on mars? Again the planet needs an atmosphere and it would take years
This is REALLY about HIS company taking over ALL of the space program from NASA. He wants the ISS brought down NOW, before schedule. It's all about the MONEY his company will make. All about enriching HIMSELF! PERIOD!
Weird that people believe that it’s easier to colonize Mars than to stop climate change. It’s like Dr. Strangelove thinking it is advantageous to live in an underground nuclear bunker on an destoyed planet with hot women.
Pure insanity! Anyone who understands anything about our universe and planet Mars would know that there is no way we'll ever succeed in settling on Mars until our science and our society has progressed a few hundred more years so I say; Go Elon! Get in your 'star ship' and settle Mars. Good luck! GR
Why wouldn't it be possible, assuming sufficient in-space industry to support infrastructure of that scale, to say build a large array of mirrors in space to increase the amount of sunlight Mars receives?
The much harder part would be giving Mars an atmosphere, since that needs moving lots of mass
Mars colonists will need to be underground due to continuous bombardment by cosmic radiation. Who does all the that tunneling and how? The effects of permanent low gravity on metabolisms evolved over 4B years of evolution are…mostly unknown, but what we do know looks rather bad. Vanity project.
I've always wondered why they spend so much time wanting to explore space but they don't even know what's in the oceans here? Why not explore stuff on Earth? No one knows what's at the bottom or even throughout the ocean
Normally I'd say the caption for that second video's phrasing 'dick rockets' would make for a hilarious high school garage band name but I remembered that 'King Missile' existed and that bozo might take it as a complement.
Every time Ketamine Ken talks about going to Mars I think of the scene in the movie Total Recall where Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s head blows up. Not that I wish that would happen or anything.
Outside the Earths magnetic belts. Outside of that, space gets very nasty indeed. Also not really dwelt on in the article is that a burst of cosmic rays or a CME could just kill everyone, eliminating the cancer risk. And shielding for it is HEAVY.
My biggest issue is you have a guy that owns a rocket company which maybe in trouble and he’s shutting down all aviation and now nasa that can restrict him. And wanting to de orbit the iss. It’s really just a big waste of the tax payer money I see going to mars which can’t happen anyhow
I need a little context here. Are flight attendants pissed off because of what muskrat and rump are doing to the safety via the FAA, or is there some other piece of shit activity, EO crap that musk-rump has signed off on that’s affecting themselves as flight attendants?
Ive been ranting about the space cancer for years. It is the biggest hurdle to any meaningful space exploration and there is ABSOLUTELY NO GOOD WAY TO STOP IT. for now. i could imagine we could make an emf big enough, but they would take an insane amt of energy to generate and maintain.
It’s a dumb goal unless you can access worm holes and travel the universe looking for something earth like going to dead planet to hunker down in lava tubes is stupidity.
This is our tax money, never forget this. It belongs to the people not to Trump and mostly not to #ElonMusk. It is money that we worked for. #ElonMusk deserves none of it for his disregard for our work.
In the case of Musk, can't we just settle for an 'unscheduled violent disassembly' ? That would be so much quicker and we wouldn't have to wait months with our fingers crossed.
He is trump’s scapegoat, remember who has started this entire mess and gave this insane person the chainsaw. Thanks republicans, stick your gutless heads back in the sand. Hopefully it is your jobs and health insurance that have been ripped away from you. You deserve it.
Yeah, not unless the exposure from the trip turns out to be negligible, or shielding is added to Starship, and they'd need artifical gravity... tethering two together and spinning end over end.
And they'd have to do this for months.
Hence, nuclear thermal propulsion is what NASA wants to use.
Not to mention entering Mars' atmosphere, doing a propulsive landing with engines that haven't been fired for months with a cryogenic fuel that boiled off.
Then, being strong enough to set up a base camp, which better have shielding.
Oh, and then the oxidizers in the regolith starts eating metal.
Nah, I don't think solid-core NTP is that great compared to chemical rockets with orbital refuelling. You have the twin issues of much heavier engines and much heavier propellant tanks (due to pure LH2 prop), which eat into the maximum feasible mass ratio, all for not that much extra Isp.
NTP architectures need engines that can relight after months and zero-boiloff as well, even more difficult there than for refuelled-chemical since LH2 has a much lower boiling point than LOX and LCH4, and most NTP proposals I have seen don't seem like they would be capable of using aerocapture.
Yeah, the risk is still there during reignition, but you don't have to worry about propellant mixtures, igniters failing, etc. NTP comes with its own set of failure modes. You could burn out your core, valves could fail, etc.
Yeah, there are going to be trade offs no matter what. We probably can 1/
Get humand there with chemical rockets. We have gotten machines there with chemical rockets. What I really want NTP for is a sustainable way of getting there, and the ability to use more than just hydrogen (ammonia, water) in the engine.
I think for an exclusive L5 to high mars orbit vehicle, the way to go would be solar or nuclear electric propulsion, since you only really need decently high TWR for low orbit departure and capture, and then dedicated surface to high orbit shuttles. That can give much shorter total travel times.
I get into arguments over on the Heinlein Forum on Facebook about this. We're never going to colonize Mars. When we explore space it's going to be robots all the way.
You are right!
We will do so well without them.
Humans destroyed Chernobyl and look how much nature has already restored itself there.
Humans destroyed the wolf population in Yellowstone National Park. Bringing back a few wolves have completely restored nature.
Let the oligarchy leave the planet!
It's going to take the American women working together to fight for OUR rights and for the freedoms of every American. These asshats are thieves, predators and criminals who are trying to 1) ruin the economy 2) cut spending for our most vulnerable 3) erase our laws and constitution. We must fight.
Please don't tell musk he cant go to mars... :) In any case he is making his robots, AI and brain thingy, so he can transfer his consciousness into robot and go without risk. Probably also wants to live forever.
Not all of them. His trans daughter has been bullied and harassed by him. And Grimes has had her kids held over her head and was in a legal battle for custody. I think she almost went bankrupt trying to fight for custody of them.
Mars has:
No Magnetic field.
A core unable to produce a magnetic field.
No Atmosphere that no amount of "terraforming" will change because there is no Martian magnetic field to stop the solar winds and radiation.
Has Elon come up with a way to install a magnetic field? Highly doubtful.
Ethics are a foreign concept to Trump, Musk, and the GOP.
And based on what's happening, things will only get worse.

There's absolutely no reason to think a crew could survive the trip. That fantasy is now only between Leona's ears.
The trip will kill you - and it will be a very bad death, even as deaths go.
It’s amazing how few US citizens truly realize the govt is spending their money. I wouldn’t want my money going to tax breaks for people that make more in an hour than I do in a year, why do they accept that? Your money should work to make your lives, and the lives of all other Americans better.
I don’t want anyone to die, but i hope and pray president Elon gets leukemia and lives a long life through every painful agonizing second of it and know there’s nothing he can do about it.
This is because the Musk space habitat is designed for being built on a planet with Van Allen belts and a partially breathable atmosphere...
This one, as climate destabilization increases.
Interesting debate topic. Would Elon's body serve humanity better by taking a 1 way trip to Mars or as an organ donor for people of color here on Earth. His body, our choice.
There’s no future on Mars in the foreseeable time. There’s still a future here….as it has been for billions of years. This, like all of that pasty faced asshole Musk’s plans….is only to enrich himself.
If only we could put that sac of foul smell, Musk, his orange turd partner in what is a trans-national criminal organization masquerading as a government, if only we could put them on one his dick rockets to Mars FOREVER!
Going to Mars may well be a suicide mission. If you survive the journey itself (not a given), the harsh conditions on the planet may well kill you. That said, I think Musk should leave for Mars right away.

Mars will only ever be habitable by human-Mole hybrids.😄
Let's hope Musk leads the way.

Sarcasm aside, if this actually happens in 6 years. I’m blaming this comment on one of those pesky LLM’s!

No, the reason colonizing Mars is not going to work is because the entire planet is LITERALLY COVERED IN TOXIC DUST.
