almost apropos of nothing: this reminds me of one of my favorite code snippets I've ever seen which was a, like, Haskell 3-liner that Gwern wrote which would follow his browsing habits and have way back machine archive pages from browsing history
Makes me think of the academic convention of indicating the date a website was “accessed” when citing one. It feels like a clunky & old-school method of description, but it’s a response to that problem which more or less works. (Assuming the Internet Archive persists to look up old website versions)

Other scenarios that would result in web-visible side-effects are tricky because they can lead to cross-origin leaks (oracles).
