Back in my day with the Young Nats, it was a universal constant that getting into a policy argument with Chris Finlayson was not for wimps or amateurs. Never nasty, but utterly merciless on any hint of sloppy argument or being in less than total command of the topic.
During lockdown he spoke to (I think) the Wellington U3A. Said something along the lines that fans of ‘law and order’ tend to be quite keen on the order part, and much less keen on the law part
As it happens, the novel I’m currently reading makes a point about the difference between discovery and invention. Seymour and supporters seek to invent principles. But as Te Tiriti is an actual document, its principles pre-exist, so can only be discovered. Another more words version!
