This is good advice. I've told multiple people, "You can do whatever you want as long as you do it on purpose," i.e., consciously and fully aware of the consequences.

When you hear a writing rule like "never do [x]," always add "without good reason" to the end.
No rules are absolute. Every single one can be broken. But you have to know why it's there, and why you NEED to break it. Does doing so actually help your story in a way that keeping it wouldn't?
