i trick myself weekly thinking i can have a drink at a bar and read. i’m thrown into reality literally moments after the first sip. it doesn’t quite work.
I wear one of those hats with the cupholders and straws so I don't get distracted or have to look away from what I'm reading. Doesn't go over so well at restaurants though.
When I was young, I would grab a novel and six pack and that was how I spent my night. At that particular time was a great way to relax. Now......not so much.
you have to maintain a consistent buzz. I read at the bar relatively often and as long as I sip gradually, it's a great experience, it enhances the good moments of the text! But it only works for fiction and pop nonfic and stuff my brain is already wired for like shakespeare.
I think he was more a drink and write guy. If you're writing when drinking, it all seems fun and inspired, but then you read it later it's so bad that you want to burn it rather than just throw it away. The new PBS documentary on him shows that the more he drank, the worse he wrote.
I grew up in a bookstore, with a bunch of heavy drinkers (not Hemingway level heavy, but pretty brisk). It took me till I got sober in 2000 to realize it was possible to read and NOT drink at the same time.
It's really cost effective - you don't need to own a bunch of books because you never remember what you read, so it's a new read each time! Cheers!!!🤣🍺
I guess it's possible. Just earlier this evening, I was drinking some Irn-Bru soda mixed with Ballantine's whisky while reading the STAR WARS tie-in novel "Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter" by Michael Reaves. 🤷♂️
I don’t know, I was a psychology major in college. There is research that illustrates the idea that if you study drunk, you need to take exams while drunk. If you study while high, you need to take exams while high, etc…
I once got so in the flow writing that my fingers were dancing across the keyboard, my mental image unfolding on paper - two pages later I opened my eyes and rbruyjomh esd djogyrf. {everything was shifted}.
When I'm sober it lets me visualize while writing, which is nice to get into a flow. I love pen and paper for building larger structures and diagramming.
I tried, I think I was able to recover 20% and had to rewrite the remaining 80
When I used to drink I’d take the Sunday Paper down to my local bar and get shitfaced. I didn’t read it, just pretended because I didn’t want to drink alone but still didn’t to talk to ppl. Yeah, I’m in recovery now.
Hunter S. Thompson may have been another matter, but I find it reassuring to learn that mythical figures of the past actually put up with the same crap we all do!
I get some of my best ideas while imbibing. Okay, maybe they aren't the best ideas for everyone. I have learned that cops do not have a sense of humor.
Same goes for artists like Montana’s CHARLIE RUSSELL, he did massive art work and sculpted much and they called him a drinker!! I don’t know how he would have done it!! So?
He was a legend. For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man in the Sea hold special places in my heart. Maybe you could use a cat, or perhaps another cat.

Those guys had the sauce (amphetamines)
Funny enough, the book never wins.
As a writer, I don't recommend the approach. Still, it works for some.
His stories made good movies, but awful books.
Steinbeck is much better.
Performance wasn’t tied to mental state…
But it also becomes a crutch, and i'm happy to report that I no longer drink!
Hopefully you were able to just unshift it like a substitution cipher.
