Presumably irrigation + water for livestock (which should include all the water needed for cleaning, quite a huge amount in dairy and other intensive livestock farming). I haven't read. @sanpaku.bsky.social may have looked into this too??

For the curious, the "potato-focused" dietary pattern was almost indistinguishable from the "meat-focused" one, with little CO2eq contribution from potatoes. The patterns are bins defined by PCA from population surveys. Note the substantial contribution of meats to the "vegan" dietary pattern.

This is crazy, thanks for spotting it, especially the vegan one (for potato-focused I'd expect that: potatoes themselves clearly have a tiny GHG footprint). Why on earth don't they call it plant-rich, or plant-predominant, plant-centric, plant-forward, etc? Blame the Irish, or the researchers?

In nutrition sci, they either define a dietary index a priori and measure adherence, or use a data-driven approach to identify dietary patterns, as here with principal components analysis.

Here, a survey defined Irish diet 'bins', with LCA impacts calculated from a French database. Little new here.

What does the 'bin' mean? And wheter it's via index or data-driven, why call it vegan? I just can't get hooked on nutrition science. I've read so many papers by now (if briefly) I should really know better but don't. On the pic, the study separates "global warming" and "land use" impacts, but the two are linked: land freed by more plant-based diets can potentially be rewilded or otherwise used to store more carbon (and boost biodiversity), thus reducing warming.
