Sponge is one of the 4 main ingredients of trifle. You don't like Trifle, you like Jelly and custard with cream on top. That's not the same thing at all.
I use jam roly poly in trifle, although it's been a few years tbh. It's a bit denser and coated with jam/cream so the jelly doesn't soak into it as much. Also it's cheap.
