They bet that it would win them more elections when the opposite was true.
That is what they get for relying on the courts. There isn't a political will in Congress to codify anything about abortion. And if they talk about banning the option outright there is no upside for their conservative party

Agreed. My father is very Catholic and very pro-life, and constantly complains that they screwed this up by not acknowledging how unpopular it is to demand that the government force someone to 'carry an incest baby' or 'watch their wife and child needlessly die', even to pro-life sympathizers.

I grew up around anti abortion activists and they believed theirs was an unpopular (but correct) position. They also would accept zero exceptions and had all of these “cases” of women who had been raped by their dads and carried the children to term and it all worked out great or something.

This is the biggest thing: movement conservatives have spent *half a century* beating the "abortion is always murder, no exceptions" drum, which was a powerful organizing position for them when Roe was in the way, but it means now they're absolutely incapable of pivoting to a non-lunatic position

They are, that's what Youngkin promised in Virgina. A "moderate" measure that had DC media chattering. But voters just don't seem to care about the specifics.

Maybe because decades of anti-choice rhetoric gives little reason for trust in legal exceptions etc.

I think it’s also hard for them to pivot because it’s just plain difficult to explain that abortion isn’t murder if it follows a rape, but is murder all the other times. One might start to think they’re not sure it’s really murder at all.

It was/is literally and frequently referred to as a modern Holocaust and I never once saw an inkling at church of, "Well, the law is this way for the foreseeable future, maybe we should promote policy that addresses the abortion demand because I really believe the things I'm saying."

You could make a case that desegregation and the Johnson Civil Rights Acts was for the American left. It happened more in slow motion than Dobbs did, but it essentially unraveled the Democratic domination of the entire electoral system, and most supporters would still support the trade.

There are several dozen states where you won't be incarcerated for life for having a bit of weed on you anymore. In my city it's legal to have psychedelic mushrooms. There is progress, it just takes a while sometimes.
