I play some modular. The reason I don’t play *more* modular is the price tag, that along with limited studio space saves me from myself. Most of the time. 😉

I started with modular before owning and other synthesizers, which I think spoiled me a bit. I love exploring, and regular synthesizers just feel way too restrictive by comparison. The only non-modular “synth” I haven’t sold is the dirtywave M8.

I totally agree with this. I’ll shamefully admit when using keyboard synths I tend to utilize presets more often then not.

I actually have a large skiff and a Nifty set up... but barely any clear minded free time to use them at the moment. I've been doing stuff since 1985 and have a massive conventional synth and drum machine collection so there's that too.

My first truly loved synth was the Nord Modular (virtual plugging for a physical synth). I now have some semi-modulars. Have never been drawn to physical cabling, but will spend more time experimenting with it in due course. I mainly now orientate on AUM, a modular system for iOS. I love it

Basically a load of unassigned hardware knobs with a software editor that allowed you to plug loads of modules together and assign the physical knobs. Wicked synth. They created a G2 rack version later. This was way more powerful than VSTs at the time https://www.nordkeyboards.com/legacy-products/nord-modular/specifications/

The EML 200 (main synth) sounds great, provides a lot of basic functions.

PAR 189 is a multimode filter/sine osc. It sounds similar to Serge VCFQ but with warmer distortion. Unfortunately no voltage control.

HP 3310A is a VCO with range .0001Hz - 5 MHz. Warm sound, less "heavy" than EML oscs.

I use this setup with Max/MSP to explore very basic feedback/cybernetics patches, often with recorded shortwave (websdr) signals as input. I find the older gear can be "pushed" quite a bit more to get interesting results from very basic ideas, it also feels more like an instrument.

i've been in and out of various modular systems several times. they were so fun but just too open-ended and arbitrary to be useful for me. i find semi modulars more productive and characterful: a nice balance of fixed architecture with extension points for subverting them a bit

Physical? No. Why? Money.
I do use bigwig studio as my daw however, which is itself very modular in its design, and now there's a full on modular environment you can open up if wanted (though I rarely use that since I can accomplish what I want through the base modularity)
