Deeply offended that @hollyanderson.bsky.social @jasonkirk.fyi @edsbs.bsky.social think people in Western MA have Boston accents and that Southwick is pronounced like that. This is like northerners thinking Gainesville is the same as Miami, or that Auburn and Alabama are essentially the same school

I wonder where the line is — my wife's college roommate was from outside worcester and had a full on click-and-clack accent whenever she was excited / upset but it was slighter in normal speech

Decently west, but like with a lot of accents there’s a major class component too (hell the Boston Brahmin accent was fully class based accent but it’s mostly dead now). If you listen enough you’ll hear subtle differences between say Boston, Worcester, and the Blackstone Valley.

My blue collar maternal grandparents live near the RI border and have thick old-school accents with traces of French Canadian and broader urban RI, and if you’re from here you can pick out the differences from the classic Boston accent.

My paternal gparents in Worcester didn’t speak much English

I live in Palmer and go up to Quabbin fairly regularly, but the story behind it always disturbs me.

I basically use the Worcester county line as the border, but the reservoir works too.
