A side hustle is a way to make ends meet when you don’t have a high paying job like the people you mentioned. Totally tone deaf statement from someone that has no clue what it’s like to bust your ass and still need a way to earn some extra money.
I feel like side hustles should correlate with the main hustle. Side hustles are essential for some people trying to cultivate a particular profession, or reach a specific goal. Example:being an author, public speaker, and activist all coincide and propel the individual who multitasks such talents.
Years ago Bush the 2nd lauded Americans for having 2 or 3 jobs. He could not connect the dots to Americans not being able to make it with one. It was tone deaf then and sadly Mr. Galloway it is tone deaf now.
My old boss told me, do one thing well. (Rather than 10 things badly). How can people master something if they’re pulled in too many directions. This esp in music. The old greats did music. The new bands all have day jobs & side hustles.
As a broke side-hustler, I can’t argue this. As someone who splits my time between my career and need to express myself through creative outlets, I can’t say I’ve had a choice though.
I really think you didn't think this through before posting it. Side hustles (often called 2nd and 3rd jobs) are all that keep many Americans above water. Look at your own bio: author, podcaster, entrepreneur, professor...come on man.
"Scott Galloway is an American public speaker, author, podcast host, and entrepreneur. He is a clinical professor of marketing at the New York University Stern School of Business."
Multiple side hustles are as deceptive a path to wealth as “do what you love & the money will follow.” No it won’t unless you also dedicate all of your time, all of your effort, and everything that you do to take you one step closer to achieving your goal. Success doesn’t just magically happen.
I have a big dream I want to pursue. I'm currently looking to side hustles as a means to get to my big dream but it's also exhausting & time consuming. Your idea makes a lot of sense but requires some courage. I might as well cut through the chase and draw a bee line straight for the big dream. TY
Salaried people working 60 hours a week don’t see a return on that investment. Pay has not kept pace with productivity in decades. Side hustles are a way for people to close the ever widening gap between labor and the beneficiaries of economic growth. Not everyone uses them as get rich quick schemes
And this is one subject I differ with greatly. Why? “Side hustles” are an organic result of the “main hustle,” that which is mainly made up of corporate jobs. In other words, employers are the reason side hustles exist in the first place. If they were so fantastic, people wouldn’t be stepping out.
Yes, but the only reason anyone has a side hustle is because wage growth hasn't kept pace with inflation.
In other words, my dear prof., people aren't doing side hustles because they want to. They're doing it because they have to in order to put food on the table.
And going all in doesn’t work for most people either. I don’t know why people refuse to admit that there always going to be “losers” when it comes to capitalism. It’s a function not a bug.
I thought it was a free world. It's your call what you do. Growing up working class, I watched my Dad do all sorts of side hustles to finance luxuries like my education. He forgot to tell us getting rich was a priority, but instead showed us how to live a rich life with not a ton of money.
Love Scott… but this kind of advice is so much easier to give when you’re worth hundreds of millions of dollars, have gigantic homes sprinkled across the planet, and don’t have to worry one second about any kind of medical insurances. It would be nice to live in Scott’s world, but most of us don’t.
While side hustles are maybe a little bit about money, they’re also about sanity.. a reminder that there’s more to you and more to the world than a primary gig that drains your soul. They offer a glimpse of what’s possible. The mental health benefits alone are worth it.
By that definition, companies should just focus on one thing.
PepsiCo should sell only soda, not chips (Frito-Lay, Doritos) or breakfast cereal (Quaker Oats); GE does mfg and healthcare; Disney is movies, sports, media, theme parks; Amazon does online, retail, book devices, cloud computing
I agree with you a lot. I think this take is a little out of touch. People with far lesser means are trying to find ways to supplement their income. Are you thinking about those people and not tech fan boys who are creating side hustles?
This is not as easy as you say. I have a full-time job, the insurance of which supports my family including a disabled child. I ALSO have a side hustle that I focus on in the hopes that it can grow.
If you think about it, we are here because our ancestor's decisions facilitated our survival. Now, it is our turn. May you be at peace and allow that "still small voice" in your head to guide you.
Thank you 🙏 Amazingly, you posted an image with my favourite shade of blue, one that I find calming and re-calibrating. When I was a child, my parents could not drag me out of the water. Have a blessed day ❤️
I am a Certified PADI Master SCUBA diver. I always feel better in the water world below. I have over 50 dives in the Pacific Ocean near Los Angeles. Peace.
Thank you. I am a PADI certified Master Diver with over 50 SCUBA dives. My dives were in the Pacific Ocean near Catalina, Santa Barbera and San Diego. I find peace under water.
Biz-guy myopia. Teachers can’t “ultra-focus” their way to higher wages by being the best. They have to have side hustles because people who don’t understand public service, including @profgalloway.com, are succeeding in popularizing the run-it-like-a-business trope. Not everything is a business.
Agree that focus is best. Unfortunately these days many full time jobs offer neither sufficient compensation nor upward career prospects to adequately support workers (esp young workers) for their present and future needs. Since healthcare in the US requires a full time job, we have side hustles.
I struggle with this. People of high intelligence often have a range of interests. How do you pick the one out of a variety of interests? How do you know when you are ready to make the jump? I am spread so thin already.
Love Scott! have read most of his books and listen to his podcast. Agree overall with this advice, I do however, think there's exceptions. I invest 100% of my side hustle, max our roth accounts yearly, pay into three 529's, and save money for another rental. I consider it another revenue stream.

⚠️ Playing field is already skewed for the ultra wealthy.
⚠️ The top 2% received about 90% of the net wealth of the masses over the past 40+ years
⚠️You think we stand a chance to create a business that would replace these government agencies?
They HAVE a focus. Put food on the table and keep a roof over your family's head.
Not all of us have big bucks like you.
I guarantee the $$ you make from MSNBC, et al appearances are more than some people make in a year.
Loved it so much I’ve been moving out of my first job. Retiring that one soon. :)
It’s a great way to test out a new career.
I detect some side hustles here.
When standing, just stand.
When sitting, just sit.
Whatever you do, don't wobble.
In other words, my dear prof., people aren't doing side hustles because they want to. They're doing it because they have to in order to put food on the table.
I agree with you ideally.
It's just amazing.
To everyone who has a side hustle, this guy's clown so keep working, make money.
That would be like being the CEO of a Car Company, Rocket Company a Social Network and running the US government,
NO ONE could do all of those well.
