Wow, New York State has agreed to stop / lift its restrictions against the use of solitary confinement for three months!

In my opinion, solitary confinement for more than a few days is cruel and unusual treatment. Let the person calm down, thrn let them out. Give them work to occupy them. Put thrm in a regular cell. If a criminal cannot control themselves repeatedly, a mental health facility is in order till they can.

That’s not why they went on strike. They went on strike because they’re being forced to work insanely long shifts. The issue with taking away solitary is that they weren’t given anything meaningful to try instead. I’m a Dem in a red county and there was a riot. It’s been dangerous

If there's any fairness in the application of labor law, every striking guard is getting docked 2x wages for each day wildcatting, the same as every other public sector worker does.

That's if Hochul treats white upstate prison guards the same as downstate transit workers.

I have questions: Are New York prisons for profit prisons? Are there escalation guidelines for putting a prisoner in solitary confinement? Is the decision reviewed by peers prior to the confinement? Is there a time limit on the confinement? Is there a mental health evaluation after confinement?
