We may need to be prepared for a similar event as our crops will lay uncollected & rot in the fields. The land will stop being fertile as climate worsens & blows off top soil needed to grow vegetables & fruit.
Now is a good time to start the tough chat once Trump ignors all courts and declares war powers control

A great read and very poignant. My own forebears began arriving in the US in 1849, and most were here by 1860, trading subsistence farming in the west of Ireland for the coal mines of northeastern Pennsylvania. Good to remember and honor on this St. Patrick’s Day.
Brilliant, especially how it underscores the racialist ideology that drove the British response to the Irish. The last paragraph, referencing the present, was perfect.
This cruel British treatment of the Irish people is unforgivable & should never be forgotten! The sad reality is certain governments still use starvation to control certain peoples; majority of Africa, Palestine, poor peoples of Latin America & South America ! All to get natural resources 😠
Sinead’s words are incredible, she always loved her Ireland 🇮🇪! I will go now to listen to more of her wonderful music & will be adding this to my favorite playlist 💚🇮🇪💚🥰🇨🇦❣️
My letter to editor published in the Phila Inquirer today comparing British Parliament policy choices that killed one million Irish Catholics to the current policies of the Republican Party. Spoiler alert, no differences.
Sad to think that many of us living today would not be Americans but for our ancestors' insatiable desire to escape The Hunger. But isn't that the plight of immigrants everywhere?
Lots of migrants these days have the added… ‘motivation’ of escaping war and persecution. It’s not just escaping poverty and hunger these days.
More grim reasons for migration with fewer welcomes.
Remember the first time I saw the grain export tables for Ireland - year over year increases of grain being shipped out to during the “famine.” Low key radicalized me.
capitalism gone bad, one of the more shameful moments in the british empire, even worse when east ireland had surpluses but shipped to london. Same thing happened to India but they dont get a st.patricks day..
If we pursue certain disciplines in higher ed, or make concerted efforts to self-educate, but our compulsory education includes very little history. Almost everything i know about ww2 i learned someplace other than school. What i know about the IPF i only know bc I read a book by chance @ age 30.
Couldn't agree more. American public education is absolutely terrible at teaching history, for understandable reasons and insidious ones. There's not time to teach everything, obviously, but lifelong learning is clearly not important to the people making decisions about what to teach.
Even illegal immigrants should not be starved! They usually are escaping starvation & cruel governments! Humans should be helping humans & not deciding who is entitled to food & water ❣️
The author is really great at compartmentalization. On the one hand it wasn’t a genocide. On the other, landlords charged rents equivalent to the total productivity of the land and benefited from the death because it enabled them to make more money.
Because you can afford it. The paywalls and email submission requisites of major news organizations encourage fake news. Small town newspapers are an echo chamber of community thought. If you want the masses to be educated, you must provide a FREE ACCESSIBLE alternative to right wing media.

I read The Great Hunger by Woodham-Smith long ago, when I was in high school, circa 1970. Horrifying and immeasurably sad. The newer research presents an even larger and broader cautionary tale.
Hi Chris, I’m watching what’s happening in the USA from Australia. I simply cannot understand how Trump and his administration can get away with what’s going on day by day. Could never happen here. Love a segment on your show that could explain why nobody is stopping them.
Can I draw your attention to the Cromwellian slaughter of the Irish a century earlier. Estimated vary but I have read that between 20 & 40% died as a result of ethnic cleansing. My maternal family in Connaught suffered greatly.

It was the price of eggs.

Feels like another lesson from history that might be ignored…
Is it really a good read for me to read this today?

Very poignant. I learned a lot from this. And it stabs like a knife that this is what we're heading directly towards.
This country has a disease of ideology that needs to be fixed.
