Hammer's 'The Horror Of Dracula' is probably the best Dracula film ever made. It's better than Brownings and better than Coppola's.

It's galaxies better than Coppola's, but most Dracula movies probably would be. This is sort of a side-subject maybe, but considering the character has probably appeared in hundreds of movies, there haven't really been a lot of genuinely great Dracula movies, for whatever reason.

I was a Universal snob for years and really didn’t start watching the Hammer stuff until later in life. Not the brightest move for sure, but it did allow me to have a vault of “new found” treasures.

I had surgery last year and had a couple days in the hospital. TCM was running a bunch of them in a row. I just laid there, orders room service and made my stay an enjoyable one.😂

My mum went to see this with a friend when it was first released. The cinema hired a Dracula lookalike in full costume to occasionally jump out from behind a curtain to surprise patrons. When this happened to mum, she whacked him with her handbag. Who needs Prof. Van Helsing'?!

Love that the new restorations have the additional material that the BBFC cut out and that had to be taken from a Japanese cut of the film. Particularly the extended disintegration at the end

I know I'm in the minority but I don't mind Gough. I've always thought his contribution to some of the genre's best and worst is somewhat overlooked, and for me he's fine here. A bit of scenery chewing never bothered some of the greats!

What’s infuriating is that in other films he’s fine and plays it pretty straight. Yet in the best horror he’d do he went over the top imho. Maybe opposite Cushing he felt he had to push out the boat and overcorrected? I don’t know

Indeed, Hammer revived a dormant genre with originality, color,....and blood! They were smart enough to avoid copyright issues with their careful titles and subtle plot changes.

They were indeed complex. I think Universal only had the rights to adapt the Hamilton Deane stage play rather than the novel itself. It partly explains why their '31 version is so very stagey, that and Browning's unmoving camera.

Interesting, I'd always believed that Universal paid a lot of money ($40,000) for the rights to Stokers novel and the stage play to have exclusive character rights. It does state that in a book I have but it could be wrong 🤔 Either way it was a complex process for Hammer.

Universal did have the rights to the Stoker novel, purchased from Florence Stoker (that was a big issue in the early '30s), and also the rights to the play. The book didn't enter the public domain in the UK until 1962.

It is. Some come closer than others, it's rarely mentioned how this changes the location to avoid the entire voyage to England, and how several characters from Stokers book are merged into one here, all to save money. But it doesn't matter because it's so bloody marvellous!

Eight minutes of unbelievable screen time from Christopher Lee, yet you feel his presence throughout the whole movie. Hammer did what they did due to budget restrictions - they kept everything tight and it worked.

Yes, changing location to avoid the voyage to England and merging several characters into one are among some of the changes to cut costs, yet it all works beautifully. Expertly crafted and indeed, with limited time and only 16 lines of dialogue Lee commands it.
