I believe 'M' was based on Peter Kürten aka the Vampire of Dusseldorf.

He scared me so much as a young'en (just from reading about him) that I've only seen this film very recently. It is brilliant

It's a fascinating story. Lang spent over a week in an asylum researching the film, meeting several child killers including Kürten, but later denied using his case as a basis. Either way it's a hugely influential film with a really interesting production history.

Yes, the '51 remake is by the great Joseph Losey with David Wayne in the Lorre role. Set in the US, it's not in the same league but if you avoid comparison it's a decent film in it's own right. As you say, well worth a look.
