Nigerian author Chinua Achebe's story of how an existential crisis seeps its way into the villages of Umuofia and how Okonkwo's, a great leader of a clan, life is profoundly affected by irrevocable destructive agents.
God of the woods by Liz Moore was the best one I read this year. Went back and read “Heft”, written earlier by Moore, excellent. Long Island Compromise was solid as well
For its sets, story, sound and music, makeup, ensemble acting, and OMG nimble camerawork and editing, The Penguin is easily and by far the best moving picture in 2024. Trust me.
I'm going to add "Favorite television moment". Tracy Chapman joining Luke Combs on stage at the Grammy's for "Fast Car". Her barely concealed joy, his reverence for her and the song, it still gives me chills.
I'm still randomly humming Hozier's "Too Sweet" (the main album was pretty meh, songs from post-album EPs are fantastic, I don't even know wtf happened there).
"Interview with the Vampire" season 2, as a whole, takes the TV show cake!
I agree, loved the first 2 seasons, although I could only take a couple episodes at a time. 3rd one was too neurotic and my mental health couldn't take it and quit watching it.
I have enjoyed Korean programming when I was on Netflix. Need to subscribe again. I find that people on Korean reality shows are polite unlike
American reality shows.
The Zen Diaries and Perfect Days are Japanese movies I’d recommend. So different from North America. I like European movies too.
If you’re willing, I’d love recommendations from you of European shows. I find that Korean dramas are so much better at plot lines and not having characters jump into bed right away unlike US shows.
Agree on those points. I recently saw movies that were part of Toronto International Film
Festival (TIFF) 2023 lineup The Quiet Girl from Ireland and from TIFF 2022, Rose (Great Britain/France)The two Japanese movies mentioned earlier are from TIFF 2022.
If it was a theatrical film, it’d win at least an Oscar for Best Cinematography, and most certainly get directing, adapted screenplay, and score nominations, as well as another acting nod for Andrew Scott.
Maybe some recency bias, but I'll tell you ... "Death's Hand in Mine" (AGATHA ALL ALONG, e7) is one of the best episodes of any genre I recall. Leapfrogging story, gorgeous imagery, and a bravura performance by Patti LuPone. Transcended normal Marvel fare (even the good stuff).

fav book - Funny Story by Emily Henry
The God Of the woods
New for this season: John Cena, a muscular yet tiny green martian that only Carmy can see.
The Bear peaked with the Christmas episode in season 2
