Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, the co-leaders of what President-elect Donald Trump has called the Department of Government Efficiency, said that they supported requiring federal employees to work from the office five days a week.

Two people doing one person’s job = not efficient, driving into the office five days a week = not efficient, creating policy to ban one person from using the restroom = not efficient
The Trump admin is not efficient and it hasn’t yet started! It’s going to be an interesting four years.
They’re going to have to come up with a lot of offices and equipment. A huge number of work-from-home fed employees are due to lack of office space. And even if they have fed computers they are using their own furniture. Some use their own PCs. Doesn’t sound like a money saver.
thats not what its about, its that alot of federal employees work from home. They want to force people back into offices and not let federal employees work online.
In the office. Many feds are teleworking 2-3 days per week. To downsize and lower costs, gov has been getting rid of office space, so this idea of sending them all into the office every day is likely to be quite expensive and inefficient.
Even though Elon loves this idea, being so vocal about it probably gets the MAGA folks all rabid too. They are only pro worker if it’s the pro worker stuff they like.
No one is looking into what Musk means about completely tearing down the economy. Millions of people will lose their savings because Musk will replace the dollar w/ his currency & selfishly make more money. The press fails again to warn the American people.
This new administration hasn’t even started yet and I’m already extremely sick of seeing and hearing Elon and his level of involvement with our government is incredibly disturbing.
So if all I hear is true, they’re asking people to work 80hr/wk, unpaid, 5 days a week. And you have to work with Elon musk? And that’s all before we talk about this job is to TAKE APART THE GOVERNMENT FROM WITHIN!! Yeah. This is gonna go just swell.
This is a problem for people in the Bay Area, who can't afford homes or even apartments. Telework 3 days a week means driving more than 160 miles in a day for some.
...they said, while both working remotely, as dual figureheads in a dept as an unnecessary duplication of the General Services Administration. Let us call for a THIRD - a Department of Unnecessary Departments (DUD) to be created and headed by 3 oligarchs and go full completionist on Vogon Bingo.
What percentage of time is actually spent working on this "job" and what percentage was spent playing Rocket Man the other week? Are we paying double for that?
The American Mockery Project brought to the world by the Heritage Foundation & financed by Leonard Leo & Elon Musk. Directed by Donald Trump, a psychopath. Legal credits go to the SCOTUS.
😱 Bet they find zip, nada, zero, fraud waste and abuse with any of their own government projects and ventures.
🤔 Bet there is so much inefficiency with their business competitors though.
I don't think they understand that federal employees are not Twitter, Google or Tesla emplyees. Many chose public service for a reason. I don't they are going to resign en masse just because driving to the office is inconvenient.
They chose to, um, serve the public? I.e. I'd surmise most of them have at least some interest in making life for their fellow Americans better in areas that private companies don't reach, like education, public transportation etc.
Even aside from the hypocritical ideals behind this... This is an incredibly stupid move if they want to remove 'radical leftists' from federal positions. DC and the surrounding areas are incredibly blue, and the only people able to or willing to work in-office are going to be from those areas.
They plan to do this so people will quit. Musk said "Requiring federal employees to come to the office five days a week would result in a wave of voluntary terminations that we welcome.”
We the remote workers are never going back to 5 days. Work has evolved. I want a 20% raise for a 5 day in office commitment. Also, commuting is now part of company time not my time since I am fully available via phone during the commute.
We could allow them to live elsewhere and pay them less?
I don't think businesspeople understand how much these people actually have to do. The public asks for so much accountability that these bureaucrats are participating in miles of red tape just to comply with public demands.
Something is wrong with musk inserting himself. I think it's clear that trumps mind is gone and he sold his position to putin and musk...they will destroy us all
Prying on federal works in the aid of government efficiency.
It must be nice jetting around on a private plane meddling in domestic and foreign politics all over the world with enormous wealth and an alleged small private sector in your pants.
Yeah, I don’t know about the other cities with large federal workforces, but Washington DC certainly needs more traffic and congestion for people to come in and sit in front of the computer in a cubicle in a building for which the taxpayers foot the operating costs. So much for efficiency.
Ridiculous.
The work day used to be "9 to 5", and now it's "8 to 5", despite doubling productivity since the work week was reduced to 40 hours.
Workers in the EU get a minimum of 4 weeks of paid vacation.
Where's the 4 weeks of paid vacation for Americans, Elon?
I think the first place we should cut is our tax dollars going to the richest man in the country. He is the biggest welfare recipient out there! We made him rich now he should pay! #cutELONssubsides
! Before he cuts anyone else!
I guess they will have to re-rent all that office space that they gave up. One of my family members works for a fed agency. It reduced its office space from seven entire floors to one.
So... they think that LESS physical office space makes government LESS efficient? They're not exactly the paragons of enlightenment or creative managemenet.
They're screwing over the veterans and Magats, too. Plus, where will they get the extra space? Some people have worked remotely for decades and have never had an office.
Two rich douchebags who share one title on a non-official commission and who haven’t shown up for work at their actual jobs in months and have never worked a hard day in their lives think that federal employees who sometimes work from home are privileged. I hate them so much words can’t express it.
Again, shows clueless cluelessness. People should work where the work is performed best. Sometimes that IS FT in an office. Sometimes it's hybrid based on the activity. Sometimes it's remote/virtual. And in this case the Federal government has all kind of jobs...some that don't even have offices.
They've publicly admitted that they intend to make life so awful for federal workers that they quit. That's one element of the plan to 'streamline.' Sending all federal workers resolve to weather this madness.
what part are you missing ? these people have been working from home without having to pay childcare nor transportion to and from work . those things cost especially child that cost more than transportantion .
but I inderstnd some people have no heart and don't tink about other's .
Ok, but avoiding the use of technology to make people go to an office building is factually inefficient.
They only need to say they are doing their billionaire real estate buddies' a solid and move around. 🙄
Tesla shareholders should have demanded that Musk was physically in the office 5 days a week as a condition for that massive compensation package he got.
You don’t deserve to be at the top of my news feed on BlueSky and I need help to figure out why the NYT is popping up on my algorithm every other scroll.
They plan on tearing up government services for normal folks and save couple hundred million, while they reduce their own tax burden by billions...THAT is the "efficiency" they are driving for....
If you want to get a picture of what is going to happen in the US starting January, look at Argentina.
By the time they’re done with slashing tens of thousands of federal government jobs, employees will be begging to go into the office 5 days a week.
Federal employees who are not in the office are not taking care of their children during the day, they’re working. The idea that they are at home babysitting part time and doing half the work is one reason there is a target on their back.
I know a VA nurse who does claims for them that this DIRECTLY screws over and I mean hard who voted for Trump. I am talking thousands added in driving fees because of the distance.
In 2023, Tesla generated over 397,200 metric tons of waste in manufacturing, the largest amount in the company's history. Tesla has also received multiple fines from the EPA for mishandling hazardous material waste. "Efficiency"
Don’t you? I remember Trump saying very clearly that this is what he was going to do. And that Elon would be the person who did it. 🤷🏻♀️ Why do folks not believe he means what he says?
I’m surprised the muskrat isn’t demanding 6 1/2 days and nights in the office. With unpaid bathroom breaks (according to biological sex) and no vacays.
Do they even understand every fed employees position or have efficiency reports . People work cross agency/ state/country so having a desk in abyss makes zero sense other then spending tax dollars and taking points without evidence. Take it from someone who worked support during covid 24/7 .
Worse. We have oodles of federal jobs that we’re remote before the pandemic. They literally never had offices, so this would force them to buy new office space.
This is just comically wrong. The VAST majority of government spending is in 3 areas. Interest on debt, Medicare and Social Security. Show us how to balance the budget outside those 3 things.
I would assume DOGE would also address those areas of concern simultaneously. He’s a schmuck, but If anyone can identify and reduce govt waste it’s Elon. I say give him Carte Blanche to do as he sees fit.
Why would you assume that?
Tesla ranks 13th among major automakers in revenue per employee. It’s not efficient. Musk is a visionary, yes. But he’s also a thin skinned narcissist with a god complex. And he can’t find spending cuts that don’t exist. Watch this space for more!
Civil federal employees salaries are only 4% of the entire federal budget. There won’t be much balancing of books there. What are they going to gain 1% if that.
True, but slashing redundant and/or wasteful pork programs/ departments and all costs associated with the maintenance of these programs is a good start.
Demoralizing. Also, not data driven since evidence has been that people are more productive when they can be home sometimes. This is so consistent with their war on women and disabled people--and families, all of whom benefited from post-Covid flexibility.
Trying to sleaze out of any attempt at checks by saying “we are unpaid volunteers” . Fine- I guess that will be one less rule that will be flat out ignored.
Will they be (more) productive? Or can they be equally productive in office? Before Covid, working in the office was the norm. Now Covid is under control. So, why the resistance?
If the issue is productivity then set productivity requirements. Federal employees have annual ratings like everyone else. And a lot of rented office buildings were vacated during Covid so the government would spend a fortune getting space for people who work from home.
Our division has been working from home since 2017. We thought the lazy people would step up working from home. Wrong! They do the same average work they did in an office.
Not sure what this will achieve considering 50% plus of DC Federal buildings are empty for the last four years. GSA has been selling off, shutting down and consolidating to save cost

Well done idiots, way to reduce efficiency.
They also think that only super geniuses willing to go “hard core” and work for no pay should work for the government.
Requiring clothes?
Making breathing mandatory?
There is no such Dept. It's a fucking joke and your acting and reporting as though it's real.
There is no DOGE. Neither of these 2 clowns have any authority.
This is a clown show for Magats
🤔 Bet there is so much inefficiency with their business competitors though.
Also: why waste tax payer money buying office space we don’t need? We’ve had full time remote federal employees for almost two decades.
My family shocked

Every American with a 🧠
Should they be in the office in DC, or in the state they are responsible for?

Massive waste of money
