How we did that. During the Cold War, Brasil suffered a coup, while US Navy was in Rio's harbor. When we redemocratized back in 1985, we rewritten the Constitution in a way to stop new coups. Don't work all the time, but is effective. And we have electoral justice, that can stop candidates.
Oh Ive heard this story before! Spoiler Alert: He ends up running again for President, everyone pretends like he didn't just try to stage a coup the last time he was in office, and he wins the popular vote!
He’s already ineligible, we are now waiting for him to be arrested. (Unrelated issues, he committed several kinds of crimes, he’s multifaceted like that)
Brazil's Supreme Electoral Court has voted 5-2 to bar ex-president Jair Bolsonaro from running for office for eight years.
Mr Bolsonaro was found guilty of abusing his power ahead of last year's presidential poll.
You don't even have left in the USA. Only a single right party that disguises itself as 2. You don't have direct elections. You count votes on paper, buddy. There is no Electoral Justice there. You had a deputy who defrauded his identity and you couldn't even depose the guy. Don't make me laugh!
He won't. Here we have Electoral Justice and he is prevented from participating in elections for 8 years because it has been proven that he has attempted to ruin democracy.
Watch and learn.
Jair Bolsonaro and his failed presidency might be the closest thing to a parallel timeline where Trump was put in jail for being a criminal.
Emphasis on might, do not fuck this up, Brazil.
The coup involved poisoning the president-elect and his vice president, and murdering at least one of the Supreme Court judges, establishing a military dictatorship.
They must be punished with jail, or they'll try it again.
Since he is hiding in Florida, can he not be arrested and extradited back to Brazil? If we do this for drug dealers, why can't we do this immediately to Bolsonaro?
It's sad that Brazil has more accountability for its political leaders than we do. Here we re-elect the criminals who tried to overthrow our government.
Yet the paragon of global democracy, the United States just re-elected an insurrectionist and 2020 election denier. WTF is wrong with our democracy that permits this? @nytimes.com @usatoday.com @cnn-news.bsky.social @foreignaffairs.com
Hey, bro! Brazil is América too. USA is only a part of America.
And unfortunatelly you can't cause you don't have Electoral Justice as we have here in Brazil.
Let me tell you we are not completely out of danger... Even losing the last elections, his ideas spread and elected many right-wing extremists in the last regional terms.
He will be arrested first. And, as far as I know, to be Ambassador, he would need to be in US and it's impossible because his passport is retained by Justice, soooo... he won't.
oh no, we actually do have (not as rigged as the US's one I must add)
but these dumbasses are attacking the judicial system as well as they're attacking democracy as a whole, don't let them fool you
Not just plans to "cling to power". But plans to assassinate the elected president, the elected vice president, and a justice of the supreme court. All that to stage a coup.
JFR Bolsonaro and 37 others (most military) were INDICTED (not just accused) for planning a Coup and the assassination of the elected President, VP and the head of brazilian Supreme Court
the plans included the assassination of the winning president, the vice president, several members of the worker's party and some judges, and we can only guess how many people would've been killed by his rabid supporters (especially the ones with badges) in the ensuing fascist takeover
Embarking on the timeline in which historians 100 years from now might comment on how Joe Biden ultimately had more success preserving liberal democracy in Brazil than he did in his own country
He IS facing criminal charges. The plan was not only (sic) a coup, involved an assassination plot of the elected president, the vice president and a member of the Supreme Court.
Gringos, let me answer the question u're doing repitetly: USA can't do what Brazil has just done because u don't have Electoral Justice as we have here in Brazil.
You had to endure Kitara Ravache and couldn't do nothing cause your law didn't protect you. And now u have Trump again.
You're welcome.
Bolsonaro is responsible for at least 300,000 Brazilians who died in the covid-19 pandemic, deaths that could have been avoided, he laughed and mocked people dying from lack of air, he is a sadistic and perverted tyrant!

They must be punished with jail, or they'll try it again.
And they even said that planning a murderer isnt a crime. Say that in court now, bitches!
And unfortunatelly you can't cause you don't have Electoral Justice as we have here in Brazil.
Not saying that the Republicans are good, but for us neither one helps.
