The School District of Philadelphia said that it would close all of its schools on Friday, freeing up nearly 200,000 students to attend the Eagles’ Super Bowl parade.

i am convinced that children need both: education by the people who love them and pass on their values to them, and education in institutions where they can learn what a society has democratically agreed upon. but to discuss this on the basis of a day off school is perhaps exaggerated?
I just think a school being closed for one day to celebrate a city coming together won’t make the kid miss an education. But a school could cancel for a zombie apocalypse and half the people would be blasted the school for closing.
Hey man, I’m a history teacher. You know it’s far more important than a run of the mill day of school? Historic events and civic engagement. That’s what this is. And if you can’t see that, I am so sorry that your world view is as narrow as it is.
A day spent with your fellow human to celebrate and rejoice in an event like this is far more important. You get to see and experience the emotions of everyone, connecting with people you’ve never met. It’s an incredible moment.
Truly! With how much more online we are than previous generations, we need these kinds of moments now more than ever. And if we have to sacrifice 1/180th of a school year to experience it, so be it.
I can tell you everything from 2018. New friends I met, who I spent time with, the street I was on, how I got there/got home. Hopefully most of those kids get to experience it with a family member or a friend. Because every year after this they are gonna say, “Mom/Dad/Whoever, remember the parade?”
No, you are an asshole because you’re not willing to see anybody else’s point but your own. Also, what is stopping anybody from teaching the constitution tomorrow instead of Friday? Furthermore, you don’t know anything about what kids are learning in school right now.
Sadly yes, I do!
Every fucking day I hope this would go back to normal. That viruses were not attacking food chain. That gov’t thinking about giving AI power over weapons. And people who need the gov’t to live.
But how many people died or were badly injured to bring about that art?
So, if democracy is dead as you say it is, teaching a civics class about the costs and logistics of public celebrations instead of having kids celebrate with their community will help revive democracy? I'm actually curious.
Right. So make sure to squash everyone’s happy moments because happiness is no longer appropriate due to the administration. Hope to see you shaming people for having birthday parties 👍
Nothing wrong with celebrating one’s accomplishments peacefully and not destroying the city which already has a budget deficit (pensions, teachers, police etc)
But it is more serious stuff happening; this passion needs to go there!
I have news for you. 99% do celebrate peacefully. It’s just that people only ever want to talk about the few who do not.
Celebrating a Super Bowl will not fix nor hurt the deficit. Multiple things can be true. We can celebrate AND push officials to fix problems. Need to enjoy happy moments.
Imagine looking at pictures of the whole city of nearly 2 million people outside celebrating the superbowl win and saying “it has no impact on society”
Sitting, drinking, eating and watching commercial sport does not make you healthy and strong. Commercial sports are often abused to propagate for nationalism and racism, stealing from consumers to give to few, creating unjust economic gap, contributing to violence and dividing people.

Quit being so goddamned judgy about how people spend their time. I have cheered for this team for 50 years, and until 2017, would have sworn that I’d go to my grave without seeing them win a Super Bowl. Save your self-righteousness.
They should close the schools for demonstrating against a fascist government. It’s like the Roman Empire: bread & games. This is probably important. Bitter. Germany is watching you USA, cause you’re undermining your democracy for a fascist dictatorship. But seems that “Super Bowl” is more important
As exciting and fun as this sounds, what about parents who have to work and now have to find last minute childcare. At least leave it as an option for parents to take them out of school to attend.
When they had the Phillies victory parade, the 1 Million+ parade attendees overwhelmed the public transportation system for hours on end. Most of the subways had to shut down. It's best to not have children stuck for hours trying to get home from school - this is a logistical matter, not fun.
Most employers in the Philadelphia area will also be expecting a signifiant portion of employees to skip work on account of the parade. Philly is built different

It is a meaningless children’s game played by adults that has no impact on society. Just money for billionaires.
Who is paying for this parade? The nfl? The team? Or tax payers?
We learned nothing from COVID lockdowns!!!
Just admit you're sad and lonely dude. Stop being a fucking weirdo and let people have fun.
Life ain’t been the same since my roommate
Punxsutawney Phil
moved out and became a star…
You are right I should not live
vicariously through other grown-up accomplishments like a 5 year old
Thank you🥲🥲
Not like a Constitutional Crisis going on right now
You are right… the kids need to see grown adults
destroy their city, civic pride…
My bad I am an asshole; enjoy
You truly get me thank you
Question: At what point did you just stop tolerating people having fun? I hope it was later in your life. You're missing out on so much.
Some of the best art and entertainment of all time was created during actual wars.
Every fucking day I hope this would go back to normal. That viruses were not attacking food chain. That gov’t thinking about giving AI power over weapons. And people who need the gov’t to live.
But how many people died or were badly injured to bring about that art?
But the more we act like what is going on in our country is normal and live like it is the easier for democracy to die.
But it is more serious stuff happening; this passion needs to go there!
Hell another time I might have enjoyed it too!!

The Same 2 million protesting the death of democracy
A marvelous patriotic thing!!!
Thank you
This is a community celebration for a town that was openly against Trump.

2) The Eagles destroyed the team Trump was rooting for so badly that he left at halftime.
Not all demonstrations against fascism are displays of anger. They can have joy too.
Vorwärts, Vögel!
