I have some of those dried in a bag, found them on a log years ago. I use them in crafts including one hat. I even did a sketch of them. Did not know what they were called until you posted photos.
I mean, I would say they are "unpalatable" in the same way cork board or cardboard would be considered unpalatable - so, basically, you know, inedible. 😂
My new book came last week "the Plants of the Appalachian Trail" by Dr. Kristen Wickert. She mentioned False Turkey Tail (Stereum ostrava) in it and how to tell it from polypore fungi. All very fascinating to me.
Hi Luke, anyone who likes mushrooms as much as you do should get the board game Undergrove about the symbiotic relationship between Douglas firs and mushrooms
The only good way to know if a mushroom is poisonous is to know each species for itself, there’s no good rule of thumb that covers them all to keep you safe
Google 'turkey tail' and you will see. They are traditionally used in Japan for cancer. Also a mycologist I know said he used them when he had COVID.
But I would only say they are used and that does not necessarily mean they cure them.
Seems an immune booster, but in what way? Just bring up the differentiation of wbc? Immune response ( that is useful) is targeted? Innate immunity knows what to attack. Adaptive immunity is targeted at a perceived threat? Myco question. Can I put shiitake caps under oak bark in woodpile?
I think they are believed to boost your immune system. All I'm saying is they say and they believe. If you ask my opinion, I don't really believe you can treat COVID with turkey tails because COVID has immune evasion properties. But it is possible that they help you from other infections.
Evasion? That term is used on Lyme spirochetes where the evasion seems more like the "cure" rips off the outer cell walls leaving the nucleus intact, but with different proteins on surface. largely deactivated, but not destroyed. Can the nucleus split into non-cwd forms and get busy once more?
Again, I'm struck by how things repeat in nature, such that these look like the striations in rock formations while also the coloring within different sea shells. 😍 God's creations are truly awesome. 🙏
I go in the woods on all fours, sniffing and skittering my way through the underbrush. I then fill my belly gnawing fungus right off the rotten wood. The next day I go to work and make decisions that affect people's lives
What I find so fascinating and awe inspirating is looking at micro nature and seeing macro nature, for example. Looking at the mushroom, I see the Grand Canyon and all its striations or looking at amazing pictures of the universe and seeing various cells in the body.
Found some nice mushrooms at night during walk with my husky Mountain, and granddaughter Molly and I thought of your posts that I share with her. She took these photos. She loves insects.
Thank you. As I’m scrolling through my feed on a quiet Sunday morning, feeling my chest get tighter as I read so many enraging political posts… this brought a smile to my face, and a calming breath. Time to put the internet down. 😌
To me, they look like they're mimicking wood shavings. They're just so amazing when you really look and study them. I know they're just mushrooms, but they are still fascinating when you really study them..
I have a request, Luke. Could you tell us a little bit about the mushrooms that you provide photos for. It would be nice to learn about them. I love fungus!
We love your mushroom fixation! We love to see mushrooms, smell them (sometimes), eat them (sometimes).
As a boy, I used to search for Cantharelles in the forest. Now, they are mostly extinct due to overharvesting.
Wild Cantharelles are absolutely the best-tasting mushrooms ever.
In the red/brown part of the map are forests that belong to the state (Het Nationale Park De Hoge Veluwe). There is even a successful program to reintroduce wolves.
Ah! I see that it a false Turkey Tail mushroom. The Turkey Tail mushroom supplements is what I take along with my cancer treatment. Put me in remission with treatment for a few months. My cancer drug quit working & I’m in between treatments but will still take the Turkey Tail mushroom supplements.

Which has some powerful medicinal properties.
These were all taken 20-30 mins from home... And I found WAY more mushrooms (see next post).
All over dead-wood in the forests there.
