Most Western converts to Orthodox Christianity quickly abandon it, because it's very strict. And not the type of strict where you get to persecute and punitively harass others, like many protestant denominations. But the type of strict where you have to be strict with yourself and self-disciplined.

Then when they can't reconcile the church's social teachings with their hatred of the downtrodden they move along to some weird subset of orthodoxy because it's "more based" or manly or something

Jesus' basic boot camp for his disciples was selflessness and servanthood bound to the gospel of salvation for all. Hierarchy, clergy separation, and dogma weren't his teachings.
