I wonder what's gonna happen to all those Syrian volunteers & mercenaries fighting for Russia in Ukraine right now.

Something tells me they won't wanna go home (since most of them are Assad supporters), but will Russia let them stay after the war's over?

Assad was also one of those dictators who deliberately sabotaged his own military to minimize his risk of being ousted in a coup (like his father did to Syria's previous government).

The Syrian military was a mess of nepotism, infighting & excessive bureaucracy. Assad also had a tendency to get rid of competent officers who he saw as a threat.

Not only did the Afghan fight back, but they still are. It was the gradual draining of their fighting strength from the West that sealed their fate. Insurgency is still ongoing to this day.
