i don’t have anything particularly original or pithy to say about january 6th, just that i can’t believe the guy who violently tried to overthrow the government four years ago is about to be president again instead of rotting in prison.

Don’t worry, the party that consistently uses violence, intimidation and lies to win power has a high school model UN negotiator in the Democrats to push back so you should be good
Being a foreigner, I do believe that part of what Trump said is true at least for his followers. "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot someone, and I wouldn't lose any voters," Democrats don't have that level of commitment or loyalty. They don't have that level of fanaticism.
I mean his sentencing is on January 10 but my hopes are not high bc even if he does get jail, they’ll delay him having to report until after his presidency, and then he’ll arrange to never leave office, or to fly off to Russia after Vance shivs him with the 25th and pardons him.
Honestly the blue states should just let him have HIS country which is all the shitty fucking states run by Republicans. Let him rule over Florida & Texas & the rest of the right wing dumps while the West Coast, the East Coast & whatever other states with Dem Governors remain a Democracy.
I was saying to fellow Europeans at the time: if the US fails to make Trump accountable, it should no longer be treated as a stable, peer first-world country with the rule of law, and our foreign, trade and defence policy should change accordingly. And here we are.
Ah, we’re still blaming Democrats, who spent the last four years expanding green energy funding, fixing our economy, and forgiving hundreds of billions in student debts for the idiocy of the average American voter.
If it helps, this is the orange man's swan song. He'll expire if old age eventually, and he'll be as empty if a husk as ever. If it wasn't him, it would have been someone else, the Republican party was always sliding down this rabbit hole, we have to get rid of the rot, not just the spoiled fruit
Quite a lot of people are going to publicly accounce they are proudly pro-Trump this week. Mark who they are because they will soon be declaring they didn't vote for this shit, and send them a link to the Project 2025 manifesto they obviously didn't read when they do. No forgiveness.
I've said it before (as many have): it's going to be heartbreaking to see a man who abundantly broke his oath of office in his first term be sworn in and pledge not to again by the Justice who helped make his second term possible.
because no one dared actually punish a wealthy white man for his crimes. They overlooked them. They slow walked them. They indulged every delay tactic. They were intentionally over sensitive about looking politically motivated. They outright promised him no punishment AT ALL for multiple felonies
I’m right there with you. If the right so easily can overlook all his faults, then that screams so many truths about who they are. I’m shook. Everything I thought I knew, believed, trusted, has been upended.
Yes. But I don't know what else to do but focus on myself and my own life. I tried to get the solidarity going that we all need to fight this, but seems like just about everyone would rather fight over horseshit and believe plausible-sounding lies so I need to find ways to survive instead
I've thought about this a lot. At the end of the day, national-level change requires organization and mobilization and these can't be done by a few thousand scattered people in just a few years... 1/2
The Democratic Party (and patriotic Republicans) have tens of millions of followers AND $$& AND a strong incentive to stop this. And they did very, very little. Infrastructure without willpower, and willpower without infrastructure, are equally powerless. But you can help your own community. 2/2
That is exactly what they are supposed to do, what was expected of them. It isn't really complicated, but all they do is blow smoke and drag their feet.
I do plan to do as much mutual aid work (directly and through orgs) as I can handle financially and energy-wise. In fact I never stopped doing that but now it will be my primary focus
I think the problem is deeper than anything that can be fixed in 4 or 8 or 20 years. The system refuses to hold powerful people to account, and that can only be changed generationally. It's really slow work, but we gotta pick achievable targets and build out. I hate that we're here... but we are.
There are days where I am cynical, and days where I am hopeful, and days when I am angry, and days where I want to fight, and days where I want to retreat into my cocoon of books and movies, and a lot of the time those days are all one day.
I am angry & sad when I think about it; the only reason that's not every single day is that I'm avoiding the news.
I mostly think the election was about inflation & a global pushback against the party in power, and he (Felon-in-Chief) was lucky to be in the right place -- making it an epic tragedy.
In some ways, I'm angrier at the Supreme Court running out the clock & granting sweeping immunity - that's not a global trend, that's partisan hackery and we all deserved better. I'm angry at McConnell et al too, for saying "oh, he's bad" and then voting to save him when it counted.
Same. Fortunately I’m incredibly busy trying to find Mom a house so there’s barely time to think BUT it’s also a thought during all that that we could just buy a place in PANAMA instead
and he was enabled by unfettered oligarchs, a corrupt and obsequious corporate MSM and a populace made stupid from 45 years of neoliberal Reaganism destroying public education and civics.
Biden, Garland, and the Democrats should not have had "Mitch McConnell and the GOP suddenly start caring about their civic duty and protecting democracy" as a key part of their plan to deliver consequences to Trump.

Anyone making stupid people famous for money are the real culprits.
And anyone supporting it by watching their shows is complicit.
The lesson will be repeated until you learn it.
Exactly what you said!💙
I’m sure it will be a sh#t show but it could also collapse from sheer incompetence, and thereby create opportunities to turn things around
If only.
He lost.
Someone hacked the tabulators to flip a percentage of votes from Kamala to Donald
Unfortunately that, too, benefits the villains, who lack introspection and are eager to plow ahead with their destructive project
It's overarching. Time is a luxury we don't have.
If anyone here has earned respite, its you.
