The idea of the government - and associated parties - of course is gaining full control over what is taught / researched, how and by whom in order to control minds according to their "philosophies" and not to science. Academia has always been at the core of resistance to that kind of mind control.
Yep, and it's rich (no pun intended) that this is a billionaire in the Oval Office, whose top advisor is the richest man in the world, talking about "entitlement."

Not just competitive, but tightly tracked. Grants have to reported on where the money money goes constantly, and it just can't go anywhere. This idea of free money is so silly.
