Sometimes, when the world is too much, I walk out to the end of a jetty, withdraw a flageolet from my breast pocket, and play All Star by the band Smash Mouth

The orchestra played this song as the students processed for my kid’s 8th grade end of middle school ceremony. And I just could not figure out of the orchestra teacher just doesn’t understand or has a wicked sense of humor, but I am pretty sure it is the latter 😂.
Just don’t run. My youngest bro ran with a flageolet in his mouth when he was a toddler, tripped and fell, and it pierced his soft palate and ran right through his upper lip. Still has a gnarly scar. The real smash mouth.
And when you draw breath between verses, you can hear the harbor seals’ emphatic barks from a craggy rock. At that moment you realize not everything that glitters is gold.
And now we know where the random music is coming from whilst sitting on our Adirondack chairs and pondering life in the far cove. You flageolet beautifully, maestro.
