The statues of Zelensky would be because he embodies the ideals of bravery, perseverance, patriotism. Yes, they all are sumbitches in some way, because they’re all human beings. But the ideals they strove for matter. They matter almost more than the man himself. (See also JFK)

Side note, I heard an argument that we should stop building statues for people altogether.

Because hardly any human stands the scrutiny of time. And since most of them are dead anyway, they don’t care either. 1/2

Take Churchill statues for an example. They stood for his staunch position during WW2 and that seemed to make sense at a time to honor him.

But we’re talking about a person at best indifferent to about 3 million people starving to death in Bengal. So, what does the statue say now? 2/2
