This was the first ‘grown up’ book I ever read, it was in the primary school library for some reason. Still one of my favourite Steven King books. Ties in the the Dark Tower series. I always preferred his fantasy to his horror :)

I don't gravitate toward horror, and that's why I had never read any of his stuff until recently. I actively avoided his main genre for years. I came across Fairytale last year. It sounded fantastic (and it was), and that drew me right into his fantasy works, and here I am.

It’s such a departure from the expected horror themes he has written. It’s great in the threads woven tie in to other stories, even ones set hundreds of years in the future. Read when I was in grade school. I was happy to later read the tie-ins in his other stories.

I remember getting this off a Scholastic Book sale list while in the 7th or 8th grade, along with his Memoir. Not something kid friendly, but deeply fascinating. I remember his vivid description for how dogs viewed scents as colors in this book and still love that imagery.

Unpopular opinion with SK readers, BUT you can follow it with Wind Through the Keyhole. It‘s book 4.5 in the Dark Tower series, but it‘s got a similar vibe and you don’t have to read the first 4 to understand it (though do read the intro).
But I‘d avoid more of the DT until you read more from him.

Stephen King was the only author who was banned. I wrote my report on the book anyways and got a zero. I was flabbergasted 😂 it was the math teacher that kicked me out and transferred me out of her class bc I was reading my tagged pages to my friends.
