By default, only people you follow can start conversations with you.

To change this, check the settings in the DM interface. You can allow DMs from no one, only people you follow, or all Bluesky users. It’s up to you!

Blocked someone? They won't be able to DM you. Additionally, you can easily block users right from within the DM feature.

You can report DMs directly to mods, who will review reported messages for Community Guidelines violations.

Mods can see the reported message and surrounding messages for context to assess your report.

I actually enjoy the tea that gets spilled because there's no DMs. you have to say something publicly on here, and that's COOL. it's losing an interesting characteristic just to become exactly like every other social media platform. I think it's a bad design choice.

I've seen services where the first introduction message is always plaintext, and then E2EE is activated if the recipient accepts the message invitation. Seems like a nice approach to filter spam and some harassment.

Also, you can still report encrypted messages.

Facebook published a scheme they use for WhatsApp where each message has a unique encryption key, and when you report messages you send send the key with the message ID. Then they can decrypt the ciphertext copy and deal with the report.

no. if you’re referring to the Mastadon concept of “instances”, there’s no directly equivalent concept on Bluesky. (although data is portable and can be self-hosted, people operating these servers don’t get so much power.) 1/2

yes, the current version is not on the protocol. the plan is to eventually implement E2E DMs on the protocol but this will require a lot more design work
